Default My door locks froze...what's best to to?

This year my daily driver is the S4 (the 968 gets to be garage queen). I took the 928 to a car wash and, since then, the door locks won't allow a key to turn. I know what the problem is but I don't know the best way to thaw and get them working again without doing damage.

BTW, it has been down to 11 degrees below zero most theweek and the 928 cranks right up, just as quickly as it does in hot weather. When tuned right these cars don't miss a lick. But something as simple as a faulty temp sensor can stop all starting.

Hmm frozen door locks....I've never had that happen?????

Do you park outside? Judging by your avatar I think the answer is yes....how about a hair drier blowing into the lock? At least then you can get the door open?

Make yourself a nice hot cup of tea / coffee and dip the metal end of the key in to get it nice and warm. Sip tea / coffee while waiting. Dry key and insert while still warm. Worked for me once upon a time. Good luck.

there is a few ways,

#1 lock de-icer, it is found in any autoparts store in your area,
#2 **** on the lock

apparently the **** disappates fast enough to not refreeze.

Here in Norway the most used solution is to fill a big plastic bag with hot water and hold it against the door. This is of course popular because plastic bags and hot water are readily available. (In Norway we use plastic, not paper, bags for shopping).

I once went to get a bag of hot water for a young lady who could not get into her car on a parking lot, but when I returned she had managed to get the door open. I asked her how, and she said that when I went to get a bag of hot water she realised that her bottom would do the same trick, and it did...

I guess the moral to the story is dont't wash your car in winter unless your girlfriend has a big butt...

Second vote for the lock deicer.

You can also use the blow dryer if you have an extension cord. Both will safely open the lock but the deicer will make a bit of a mess and you'll want to have a cloth to wipe off the excess.

Next time used a can of compressed air to blow out the locks after you wash the car to insure it doesn't freeze overnight.

Good luck.

Sometimes the problem is not in the lock but in the door mechanism, this usually get problematic if the window gasket is leaking water into the door. The real fix for this is to repair the leak and grease the mechanism, but if you are stuck on the parking lot outside work your best bet is to heat the whole side of the door until the mechanism thaws.

If the problem is in the lock I also vote for the deicer. This lubricate the lock also so the lock will not freeze as easy later. The problem is that usually the Deicer is locked inside the car!

Pull the car into a heated space and let it thaw for several hours. It will thank you.

once the lock is unfrozen , try spraying some WD40 into it this, this should remove some of the water

What about just spraying some coolant into the lock? It will melt the ice.

Lizard, RKD, Ian and Aryan.....

I didn't think I could laugh this much from reading a frozen door lock thread!!

H2, I usually keep a small pocket spray deicer in my purse. Not too helpful to you, being a guy, I guess, but maybe you could find a way to attach a small can with a zip tie underneath the car somehow/somewhere? A la a spare key holder...but without the magnet.

I don't know....just thinking out loud....
