Mike, still working on the schedule, so not certain yet. I'd really be interested in seeing the process from start to finish - if I can't make it until Saturday morning, will all of the projects be under way at that point?

Hi Bruce,

I plan to start disassembly Friday evening. I'm not sure how far I'll get but I doubt we'll be too far into it before Saturday morning. I'm sure we won't get as far as installing the belt and putting it all back together before Saturday and I think that's the most important part to see. I'm not sure what the plan is for Gary's car. We may not start on it until Saturday morning. I'll be home Sunday and the garage is available as long as it's needed.

I'm sure you'll see enough to make the trip worthwhile if you get there Saturday morning. Plus it would be great to have you (and your car) here. I hope you can make it.

Mike--

My TB routine includes replacement of ALL the coolant hoses. Age deterioration factor is similar to the TB, plus you'll have a couple of the big ones off already and the coolant will be drained. Of course that means a new heater valve too and the stub connector to the head. The collection of hoses includes the to/from the heater across the back, the jumpers between the reservoir and the metal pipes on the fenderwell, and the jumpers between the metal pipes and the engine in the front. The two small vapor vents too. And the coolant pressure switch in the vent line just forward of the reservoir. And a new coolant bottle cap. Jim B put all these hose in a "care package" for me, along with cam and oil pump seals, the little guide bearings under the crank nose and the two little retainer clips for them. Look carefully at the gears on the cams and the one on the oil pump. Anything resembling wear of the anodized coating on the cam gears means replacement needed. Ol pump gear wear is pretty obvious too. Get the guide washers for the crank gear. Borrow or buy a Porken cam timing tool, too Easy enough to touch-up the cam timing while all the covers are off and easy access.

Look at caps and rotors now with an eye to replacement. They will be off and easy to check and replace if necessary.

Get all new water pump bolts to install with the new pump.

Thermostat and two seals-- one is the ring behind, plus the o-ring in front.

Get a little hylomar or similar gasket sealer to hold the WP gaskets in place. Glue only on the pump side please, so the gasket sticks to the pump on removal; the rebuilder can wrestle with that easily enough next time a pump is swapped on.

Get a tube of teflon pipe sealant paste in a tube from the local H-D. For the tensioner bolts where they penetrate the block galleys.

Got any hints of PS leakage? Now's the time to replace any hoses and of course the reservoir/filter. The pump will be much more easily accessible during the belt process while the alt/PS console is loose from the front of the block. Reservoir and the hoses undernat much easier while the fan console is out.

Stock up on your favorite coolant, distilled water, and water wetter in advance of the project.

There's an o-ring on the dipstick tube where it connects with the bock and oil sump. Replace it.

Plenty of Brake Kleen. If you can, a thorough bottom- and front-of-the-engine cleaning in advance of the surgeon's arrival will make things a lot more pleasant.

Cut a double-layer piece of corrugated board to fit in the back of the radiator for protection. Wide masking tape holds it in place.

Drain the coolant from the radiator and the block galleys before you move the car to the working area. No need to swim in coolant residue under the car.

Hi Mike,
Sounds like a great event. The best part is I just happen to be off work that Friday through Monday so it looks like something I might be able to do. I just had a shop do my TB and water pump (I'm actually having the 1500mi retension done this Friday). Unfortunately I wasn't able to convince my mechanic that the Porkensioner was a good idea. Having read through the posts I'm not clear on how many people are planning to have their TBs done at this point (sounds like your car, Abby's and whoever was claiming the free TB offer--everyone else was just hoping to observe???). I would love to come and get assistance putting a Porkensioner on my car (along with the other while your at its) so long as my presence wouldn't make things too crowded.
Thanks,
Dan

Thanks for all of the suggestions, Dr. Bob. I'll follow your advise as much as possible. It looks like I've got some serious shopping to do. Any chance you'll be on this edge of the world and will be able to join us? I recall your travels used to bring you out this way on occasion.

It'll be good to see you again, Woody. We're all doing great and looking forward to the end of winter. Our recent trip to Sebring gave us Spring fever.

Hi Dan,
Make plans to be here. There's plenty of room. So far we've got two belts being changed, mine and Gary's. I think Gary is hoping to take advantage of Roger's generous free belt offer but there's still a standing offer for one more.

I'm sure there will be people here willing to help with installing a Porkensioner on yours. I know some of the folks around here well enough to know they'll be participating as much as observing. From what I've read and heard, the Porkensioner is the way to go. I like the fact that it uses Audi parts. I'm a big Audi fan having had many over the years including my current 2001.5 S4. Hope to see you then.

I just read through the earlier posts and see what you mean. Abby, are you planning to change the belt on your turbo car or were you calling dibs on the free t-belt for Gary?

Hmm, is there a record for the number of 928 t-belts changed at one event?

Thanks a bunch. I will definitely plan on being there, porkensioner in hand. Hopefully this will be huge in building my confidence so I can start doing more work on my car.

Mike--

As luck would have it, there's a very good chance that I'll be within a couple states of you sometime in that period. Just don't know the exact dates yet. My schedules are determined by people with checkbooks who negotiate the rental fees and terms with my wife. I'm usually the last to know.

I'll PM with/for specifics if the trip firms up.

Hey Mike; just catching up on the forum since I'm still on the road. The Sunday schedule for the Road Atlanta Club Race is typically warmups in the morning starting at 7:30, one Enduro race running from 8:15-9:45, quiet hour from 10:00-12:30 with track touring usually around 10:30 or 11:00, then another 90 minute enduro race in the afternoon. The crowd on Sunday tends to be smaller since some racers only sign up for the sprint races which are held on Saturday, but there is usually still a good crowd through lunch time (and we don't have track touring except on Sundays--we just don't have the time).

Sorry I didn't get down to the shark compound at Sebring--my cordless microphone didn't give me much room to roam!

Hi Dick,
It was good to see you at Sebring if only for a few minutes. Too bad you had to be stuck in the tower the whole time but from what I saw, the view up there is pretty sweet.

I guess we'll play it by ear as to when we make our drive up to Road Atlanta for the club races. I think having us all in line for the track tour on Sunday would be awesome but I'm not sure how many people are planning to be here Sunday. Saturday may be better for the drive up to the track while everyone is here and there's a bigger crowd at the track. Either way, I'm really looking forward to the event and getting my t-belt done in time for the next DE at RA.

Hi Mike; I understand why some folks don't want to hang around until Sunday, since all the 928 fun will be on Friday night & Saturday. I sure wish the schedule would work for me, my belt only has about 18K miles on it but I'm getting really close to 6 years so it's due.

I had a bit of excitement getting back from Florida; the 928 was suddenly really down on power, turned out to be a plugged Cat--wonder what I might have done at Dyno Days with that fixed? Got that fixed down there and then drove back into the Wednesday storms here; made it through OK and the car was purring like a kitten after the Cat repair. I'll keep you posted on the race schedule, and you're right--the view from the tower at Sebring is pretty good!

We can do it again sometime soon. I'm gonna need to do the green car soon. Let me know when you're ready and we'll set something up.
