Will let you know when finished!

Pulled the other rear shock/spring out this afternoon and stopped work after putting on the spring compressor.

When I do try them out it will be hard to be objective - somehow car always feels better after you've worked on her!

same amount of work on an OB,

Can be done at home but an air compressor and spring compressors make the job MUCH easier.

The adjuster sleeves are frequently seized to the old shock bodies, and will be destroyed by anything less than a well set up press ... which many do not have: if the adjuster nut still spins, the sleeve can be recovered by hacksawing it away with a section of the shock cylinder. Then, reassemble the hacksaw with the blade inside the cylinder, and carefully cut the steel down to the aluminium sleeve. Twist out the old shock piece .... and good to go.

Righty, Il just wait for Roger to post and then I suppose Id better give him a call with the card details !

Just need a price for new springs, an idea of shipping time and the chap Il probably get to fit them (my time is limited at present) wants me to confirm they'll come with new platforms...???

Can't wait, hopefully will have a fresh handling 928GTS !

Don't wish to second-guess Roger, but I don't think springs come with new perches. You would have to re-use the ones from the old shocks (I did that after cleaning them up and a dab of new paint), or buy new ones. They are pretty cheap items.

Well, Im trying to work out what he meant.

'I told him I was ordering new shocks from the states and he said 'make sure they come with the platforms as your platforms will probably be crappy by now'. Its the dampers that he was asking about.

He went on to talk about the ride height adjustment.

The Springs : Well, im just thinking that if they are not too expensive it'd be daft not to change those as well !

Your stock springs will be fine. I have installed Bilsteins on my '93 GTS and my '87 S4 and retained the stock springs on both cars with excellent results. My GTS did need new front shock top mounts though.

I know what you mean about the springs. Aesthetically I would have liked to have bought new ones but when I researched prices (not that deeply I admit) it looked like the springs would cost a lot more than the shocks. Also it would have meant making sure they were correctly matched to the originals (I think mine have the two blue paint stripes).

My understanding is that unless the springs are cracked then they are fine. They may stretch somewhat but this can be accommodated in ride height adjustment.

Check with your mechanic, but I think that by "platforms" he was referring to ride height sleeves/adjusters. Old ones get incredibly cruddy - I wouldn't dream of trying to re-use mine let alone attempt to get them off the shock without damage to the threads.

The top and bottom spring retainers (just metal plates with a formed end-stop for the spring to fit into) will be dirty but they clean up ok and it's very easy to get them off the old spring. One end will pop out anyway when the spring is compressed, and the other end can be tapped off with a punch if it hasn't come free when spring compressed already.

You'll probably know who's doing it.
