Brett: It may be dependent on model year. I know that the battery box changed, and that probably impacts how much you can rotate the diff to maneuver it out.

Hi Bill

Ahh....you may have found the reason....

On my S2....My battery is smaller than on an S4 because the back corner of the battery hole is sort of dented in so the exhaust can came out of the back corner diagonally, rather than an S4 where the exhaust comes straight backwards...and the battery box is NOT dented in and therefore a fullsize battery will fit....

Next time I am changing my diff, I will take some pictures and put them up here....

HMMMM...if that is the reason......on an S4 you could always cut off the corner of the battery box and contruct a bolt on corner panel if planning to change the diff often......it would be a LOT easier than pulling the whole tranny...

Just a thought.....

Good thinking Bill LOL.....I was starting to think I was imagining pulling my diff lol...

All the best Brett

I think you don't have any shielding on the tank there either since the exhaust doesn't go past it like the S4's do...Perhaps if the shielding were remove it may come out. Interesting..

Maybe some difference in the outside diameter of the ring gears with different ratios?

One other question; gb mentioned checking/rebuilding the LSD, what would be the labor and parts costs for doing that assuming replacing all the friction and pressure disks?
Hopefully, all you will need is the friction discs. Haven't checked recently, but they were about $50.00 each. If they have galled the pressure rings...from the wrong gear oil or from wearing out....your economy limited slip just got very expensive....the pressure rings are over $250.00 each.....and only stocked in Germany. (I've got two limited slips apart, right now that need new inner pressure rings.) We normally stock all of the pieces needed for rebuilds.....right now are out of inner pressure rings.

We charge $300.00 labor to clean, measure, and rebuild the units. Not sure what others charge.
