Kieth,

I'm going to share one experience - doubt it's the cause of your gremlin, but----
My '89 S4 track car (essentially all stock) wouldn't start one morning at Viginia In'tl. Checked several things (fuel pressure gauge, change fuel pump relay, etc.), and finally thought "maybe" I'd opened the hatch in a different way that I'd locked the car (been locked overnight at the track). I re-locked the car from the driver's door, unlocked it from the driver's door, and it started right up. The dis-abling system had apparently been confused in some way. Had a much better track day than I thought I was going to have.
GOOD Luck in finding the problem.

Wow...you guys would give me that much for it? I wasn't sure if I could squeak $5K out of it right now.

Gary, went through the alarm issue. If the car alarm confused itself in anyway, it would have shown up at the ignition relay.

No matter what...I am getting one step closer to figuring this out. I hope it's something already mentioned and I will gladly look foolish when I find it.

Guys, in case you haven't noticed it, he has a sweet all black OB to bounce in while his GTS is down!!

It takes the pressure off of you when you have 2 to drive and 1 goes down.

Good luck getting it up again Keith.

It looks like a bad fuel pump.

Keith--

Rob Edwards loaned me his JDS Spanner to do a little pre-intake-refurb analysis of my S4 sensors. One of the many tests is an injector test, where the LH is prompted to cycle the injectors on and off. You can hear them working, amazingly enough. The EZK testing includes one for the crank position sensor. I'm thinking that a similar testor, alongside a fuel pressure gauge to verify actual pump performance, would shortcut a lot of the speculation and guessing about the GTS' current malady.

Anybody in the PNW region have a Spanner for Keith to try?

There's gotta be one up there somewhere, but if not- Keith- I'd be happy to mail mine to you for diagnosis if you'd like once Dr Bob is done with it. Let me know.

I have one, but I think Keith has already checked the injector functioning.

The monster lives.

I had said before that I would have no issues being embarrassed over this and I still don't even though I found the problem.

So I sold the black car and the buyer was coming to get it on Saturday. Things arranged as they are vehicle wise right now, that left me with nothing to drive. I had no choice but to make this a priority and get this F'in thing taken care of!

First thing I did was throw a pressure gauge on the fuel rail, though fuel flowed out, there wasn't enough pressure to register on the gauge. So taking the advice from earlier, I disconnected the ext pump and checked the inner pump. Worked quite well. So just for ****s and giggles, I double checked the replacement ext pump. Nothin! HUH?!?!?!?! I just replaced this thing a few weeks back and checked the operation before I installed it! Pulled the ext pump back flushed, flopped polarity to run it backwards...stumbled a couple of times, flushed more, flopped polarity a few times running it back and forth and it buzzed like a pissed off bumble bee. Re-installed, checked pressure which was now off the hook, buttoned it all back up and prayed to the GTS Gods then twisted the key. It FIRED up with an angry roar!

I'm pretty certain that if I had the, "no rush, take it slow" time that I used to, I probably would have double checked something like this when I did the swap. I had just assumed that it was working and I did hear "a pump" buzzing away when I jumpered the relay. A small particle must have gotten into the pump when I put it all back together the first time.

No excuses, I missed it and could have avoided a lot of frustration for all.

Thanks to everyone who had contributed to this thread. I appreciate your knowledge and willingness to help me out. Here's to you...

Keith, Very happy you got it sorted out. Would it be rude to ask what you took for the Sinister car?
I love(d) your cars, just curious what it would take to get one like that.
Thanks,

You may want to go back to the first post and add some detail as to the fix...so those in the future won't have to read 13 pages..(unless they want to) .

Default WOO-HOO!!

Happy to hear, Keith!
Been following 'from afar', and we were kind of surprised YOU were perplexed with this 'dignostic dilemma' for, well, now, four weeks to the day.

Time to turn your attention to the REST of your fleet!
Once again you Got The Speed!
(And I bet Jen is happy, too!)

Best,
Kim

yeah!

Exactly the same issue i had with mine

Q: you mentioned you replaced the pump with some other pump, is the replacement pump new or used? At $150ish the pumps aren't THAT expensive, you may want to just put in a new one, any used one is still likely to be 15-20 years old.
