Default Got a 1990 928 S4

I have been hanging around the 928 forum for a while looking and learning about the 928. I have a couple of 911 based cars already and have always wanted a V8 Porsche. A bunch of guys in our breakfast club have 928s and I just love them, so I have been on the lookout, locally and nationally for the right car.

I got lucky the week before Christmas and found this Grand Prix White/ Cashmere 1990 928S4 locally in Denver with 36k miles on it, two owner car, in mint condition (what are the chances of that?). The car checked out and has a full history so I bought it for what I think is a song, given the condition and mileage.

It is a beautiful car; it drives, and looks like new in every way. The guy that had it bought it 10 years ago as a Porsche CPO car from a dealer in Colorado Springs that took it as a trade in from a guy in Texas. For the last 10 years it has only made trips from Denver to Las Vegas in the summer every couple of years.

This car is like new. The body is perfect and has all original paint. The interior is all original with the exception of the window tint and the Blaupunkt Tucson radio, amp, and 10 disk changer. It even has the original mats and they are in great shape. The car has a K&N filter, rear muffler bypass (I have the original muffler with perfect paint), and 993 Cup wheels, that is it. The underbody and engine are like new, nicer than my 10k mile 996 Aero. The Timing belt and related items have been replaced and the car has been maintained locally at the Porsche dealer in Lakewood, CO.

My first impressions are that this is one seriously fast car. Even with the PSD the back end of this thing is all over the place on WOT. I plan to drive the car along with the rest of my stable to events, drives and shows. It is the perfect car to take to the Porsche Parade this summer. I plan to keep it stock, and just perfect the detailing of the interior and exterior. I would love to put GT cams in it and tune it, but I want to keep the look totally stock. Even at 5280 elevation, this car is deadly fast. I love it, and I am happy to be part of the crew over here in the 928 forum. Thanks to all here who post the valuable information that allowed me to make a well informed purchase.

I will post better pictures once the weather here gets a little better.

Chad

Beautiful!

Ride height needs to be adjusted up front and back for improved handling - see the FAQ topic at the top of this forum for a detailed link.

Congrats and welcome, Chad!

Congrats! Very nice score and a great Christmas present!

A quick comment, instead of going to the expense of installing GT cams you might have good luck with dialing in your cams using Ken's 32V'r cam timing tool. Could make a big difference for very little effort and $$.

I would say to dump the K&N and put a stock filter in there, but that might start a debate :-)

Congrats Chad, that is a beautiful 928! You'll love bringing the shark to car shows, it never fails to draw a crowd or good conversation. It's even more fun to pop the hood and confuse people when they see the V8.

PS: Check the age of your tires, if too old they won't stick and you'll experience the loose feeling you describe. Once you get sticky tires you'll find that the acceleration is brutal and controlled.

Looking forward to seeing more when the weather improves.

Hi Chad , you have a nice collection of cars and you scored the 928! I would also suggest that you ditch the KnN filter the factory filter will be fine , Be careful when you remove the KnN as dirt usually will fall into the underside of the filter at the back

Hey Chad. Congrats on your new purchase.

Also check the threads discussing first gear starts. I think in most cases, your '90 starts out in second if no one has installed a bypass for the kick down switch.

Default Great Advice

Thanks for all the advice. I will get the suspension adjusted, do these cars benefit from corner balancing like the air cooled cars? I will get rid of the K&N, it also seems like they screw up the MAF on other cars, not sure about the 928. I adjusted the throttle pedal so that the kick down button fully engages, I am pretty sure it launches in first gear if you go WOT, is there another mod that changes it to always start in first? The tires were Falcon with full tread, but I dislike them generally, so I got a set of Michelin Pilot Sport AS, which even though they are AS they should be stickier than the Falcons. I got the AS's because I was considering using the car for a DD. Now I think I will keep the Volvo and get rid of the Ferrari (I have too many cars) and not DD the 928. I really like Michelin's though and have Pilots of many sorts on all my cars. Thanks for all the great comments, I will take good care of her. We name all the cars, the 928 is now Bridget after Bridget Jones, my daughter liked that one.

Congratulations. Looks like you found a keeper. You say you have multiple 911 based cars already. 928s can multiply too if you're not careful.
Enjoy and welcome to the club.

edit: Love the Ghia.
