Greg,

These look exactly like the rods that were in both 90 GT engines i had apart. I actually had thought they were inferior due to the taper at the top of the rod on the piston pin end. The cross section appears to be small. Is there any material difference between 90 and 91? The rods appear identical, but maybe they were produced with a material?

Had no idea these rods were so sought after.

I don't think they are "sought after". Not many people even know the difference. The rod you have pictured is indeed the forged rod. If you turn them on the side, you can clearly see the forging line. Porsche decided that the stock rod was not strong enough for the higher rpms and horsepower that the GTs were going to be subjected to. They stuck these rods in. Interesting that they built these for just those few years and used them only in a few engines.

I'd use these rods in any high performance 5.0 application...especially if I had a supercharger.

Yes your right, i never knew of differences in rods until i read it here from you just a short while ago. That is indeed nice to know.

But i know you mentioned before that it was in 91 GT's, I guss we can now clarify that these rods are in 90 GT's as well. My car was a Dec 89 built so maybe its safe to assume all GT's after this and most lkely before have these same rods, not JUST 91 models, or late 91's which is what i swear i first read.

here is a pic of the rod from the side

Well, geez, Ron, at the rate he's racking up miles on the current engine, it'll be all worn out by, oh, 2115.

Does this have something to do with supercharger or stroker dreams, Rob?

Man, I should have bought a 4.5L engine at half price and spend the next couple of years rebuilding it at my leisure (and for my education) to drop into an OB someday.

I've seen these rods in '89-'91 GTs...although I don't think all the '89s got them. Pretty sure all the '90s and '91s got them.

I've seen 1 set of these rods in a '91 automatic. I assume that Porsche was using a variety of pieces, that they had "left over" before they started making the '92 models...they have a history of doing this, in the 911 series vehicles.

"Well, their is another 928 in your bay"

So I got rid of the second 928 and on her first try backing out of the garage with the caravan she ripped a $350.00 side mirror off the side of the van.

I never laughed so hard in my life becasue she was so hell bent to put that van in the garage and I told her she was going to damage the van/garage/house, fence or all of the above. So then on her first attempt..... The van now sits in the front of the house no matter the weather.

Mkay, followup. I just wanted to show the block webbing machining without that pesky crank in the way:

The thrust bearing is fine:

Looks good, Rob. That engine is hardly broken in!

You have to put many more hard miles on her yet. And looks like you'll get those miles from these pics.

make sure to clean the girdle to block sealing area so you dont have any leaks when you reinstall it after coating with 574 loctite

New question to an old thread. I'm considering using Permatex UltraBlack on a range of items under the car to deal with a range of leaks. I'm pretty sure it (and things like Yamabond) have been rated highly by Rennlist members. But this thread suggests it'll be a PITA to deal with later (assuming I will be the owner of the car for the next decade)...

Any thoughts?

Gluing your engine together will turn you into one of "those" PO's.

Just use new factory gaskets, applied following factory directions, under clean conditions. Properly applied, they seem to last in excess of 20 years or 200k kms.
