Is this a normal wear pattern for an '82 LR? Or does it look to require alignment or suspension help.

OK, guess i'll start with an alignment. Can different things be used to center the rack or must it be the bolt designed for it?

Taking plastic plug out and checking rack is centered is enough. Bolt isn't even needed. Its just used when one person does both centering and locking steering wheel from moving. When one person is under car and guides another one who locks steering wheel its not even needed.

for the OP parts to check (that might need to be replaced) lower control arm bushing to rear Xmember and upper control arm bushings to top of hub carrier and Xmember

Thanx Stan. Is this a visual check or do I move the elevated wheel on a vertical or horizontal axis?

My GTS did the same thing to the rear tires withing 1000miles after I purchased it. When I got the align done, quite a few of the values on the post alignment report were out of spec and in the red. The rear values were the worst and caused most of the inside tire wear (both camber and toe)

I just remembered. My '82 has S4 suspension. What precautions, if any, do I need to take to ensure they allow for this in doing the alignment?

Charley, regardless of the different parts the alignment should bring the wheels into the same relationship to the car/road. They just need to get it right is all.

Just make sure they don't lift the car. If they have one of the later Hunter DSP machines, they should have no problem with this.

The shop I used in Stockton is called Western alinement (thats how they spell it)...I think it was about $80 and they drive the cars over a pit for the alignment...so no lifting....it made a HUGE difference in sharky after I replaced the steering rack...much smoother in the corners and more predictable....vs the sloppy snap oversteer I had before...but I've never had tire wear problems...other than the rears being bald????

Go to the local Sears, they have the "hunter" sytem. Plus you can stand under the car while they align it usually for @$90.
