Kudos to the work you do with Excellence Pete! I would also have never guessed it wasn't a big company effort. Truly a 1st class result for your work!

I, for one, have never even sat in (even touched) another type of porsche car, ever. Only the 928.

Deep level of obsession, can't figure it out.

How can I subscribe and get hard copies\?
There is just something "right" (really right) about the 928's proportions, its hood lines (among my favorite 928 features), its timeless modernity, and its interior, which would still look good in a new car if transplanted from a '78 (save the radio, clock, and speakers). Then there's the build quality, engine, and chassis layout.

It had to be good. Really good. It was to replace the 911 and be Porsche's future. And it was good. I'm guessing that's part of your obsession.

You should try some other Porsches! Don't sell the 928, but a stablemate might make you appreciate it even more. Over the years, I've met very few Porsches I didn't like, and have grown to like 911s (I started as a 914 guy, so talk about no respect! ) quite a bit. Boxsters (say what you will) are also stellar sports cars. But so are 996s and (mostly) everything since so long as Tip isn't involved (I like the 928's automatic better!). But then, they had to be just like the 928 did: they were meant to replace an icon. A Boxster or a 944 or a 914 or a (gasp!) air/oil-cooled 911 might be a nice juxtaposition in your garage next to the 928. If you're like me, space is at a premium and one is it. I miss having two Porsches (one old, one modern), as I never enjoyed the marque more than then. Perhaps again. Perhaps a 928, perhaps a 996, perhaps a Carrera 3.2, perhaps a 964. My mind is pretty open, but it'll have to be something I can use every day, with kid seats at some point.

You can go to www.excellence-mag.com to get a sample issue sent your way. The back issues pages have a pretty complete list of all the 928 articles over the years, but are cumbersome. Better, IMHO, to use the back issues page online and "search" it. Pretty easy to do, at least in Safari.
http://www.excellence-mag.com/back_issues.html I see 35+ articles on the 928.

Best regards,

pete

Understood, just an undeveloped notion. Thought it might provide a handy crosswalk to get into a bit of the Porsche culture of the time- lots of mechanical nuances there, the federalization shops & etc, but then the opportunity to consider some of the 'types' of folks that were importing them & for what, etc.

At any rate, keep up the good work- glossy pages and good prose are bound to be a winning combination.

Pete

It's the best PORSCHE magazine out there. I've been a subscriber long before I was a 928 owner. It just keeps getting better with time. I'm down to only 2 auto mag subscriptions and yours is one of them. Thanks for providing this Porsche junkie with his fix.

Thanks for another great article....... Didn't you write the article on Louies monster too?

Its safe to say the 928 gets its fair share of press time in excellence....given how relatively few were produced...

I think a good idea for an article is the $20k question..... say you have $20k to spend on a Porsche...what can you get for your money & which models.... boxsters, 928's, 944-951-968, 911-964's, maybe a high mileage 993....

We did (almost) exactly that for the 20th Anniversary issue, but with a 986, 968, and 911 3.2.

For the latter two, we chose between 911 and 964 as well as 928 and 968 before we got rolling. I don't think we made the wrong call with the 911 @ $20,000, but we picked badly on the 968 and the car got left for dead. M030 would have helped (a LOT), and we understood the 968 we chose had it. Then it drove up with the standard, too-soft suspension.

I still think about what that comparo might have been like with a 968 M030...or a mildly tweaked 928 S4 stick.

Of course, it would have been nice to take 4-5 cars for the test and maybe we'll look at that. But I can tell you, from a logistics, liabilities, and $$ standpoint, three's already a crowd on our test loop. And I'm not a huge fan of testing street cars on track. It's okay and FAR safer for discovering behavior at the limits, but the more time I spend on race tracks, and in race cars, the more I realize how compromised street cars are on track. It just isn't what they were optimized for. Porsches, though far better than most, included.

All that said, another comparo is always possible, and interesting Porsche matchups are endless if you think outside the box and analyze it from a potential buyer's view. I'd love to do one at every $10,000 increment. Get high enough to where you're thinking used 997 and suddenly you can buy a real 924 Carrera GTS. Now, that's the FAR side of the moon, but it just isn't always as X vs. X as most magazines would have you believe. No one does this kind of thinking better than the UK's Evo...

That was a great article...the three car comparo 911-986-968....but I also agree a better suspended 968 would have made a difference....

I would say the single biggest improvement I made to my stock-ish 928 was the wider 18" wheels-tire....going to 235 front and 265 rear made a huge improvement to the handling with minimal decrease in ride quality....of course my tires were junk before too....

LOL!

I would be (severely) remiss if I did not note that the magazine would be nothing without its contributors. They are, most often, where the rubber meets the road.

And we are lucky to have some great ones, who are true enthusiasts -- talented and driven ones.

OK Pete:

This was posted 5 days ago. Some one in Missouri already had their copy.

I'm a subscriber - where the Hell is MY issue? I'm only about 20 miles away.

I actually just got my copy yesterday. I always check online to see what is coming up.

On a different note, anyone know the owner of the 928 used? Is he on rennlist? Would it have killed him to detail his engine bay before the shoot?
