Before this gets out of hand, let me say that I'm a 993 owner, which is my first Porsche.

I really didn't appreciate Porsche engineering until recently. Now that I do, I realize that some great bargains can be had. I would appreciate first hand experience in what 928 life is like.

(And... I'm not the original poster in the "other" thread.)

Thanks for your comments!

Rich Guy ? I thought I was rich until I bought 2 of these
My brother has owned several Porches in his life and he still talks about the 928as the best one he ever had. Remember the older you get the better I was!

That guy is funny I bet you James Blue82 or Chuck's Kermit which are early 928s are much better condition than his 993.

I assume the first few model year, sub-$10K cars are out, but are there any particular model years that represent something close to a good "value," where if you find a nice one, impeccably maintained, it can give reliable service like we receive from our 911s when driven occasionally? (my 993 isn't going anywhere)

Or, are all 928s just time bombs full of myriad electrical gremlins just waiting to $uck you dry and I should have the sense to take my hand off a hot stove?

If you're interested in a 928 get the best example you can afford (as mentioned previously).

I have a '91 928GT and a '07 997. I dearly love them both and am lucky to have both.

As you're discovering the 911 and 928 are "technologically dense" in that there is a lot of stuff crammed under their skin . Both are very rewarding to own, drive, and work on.

It's sad to see how the 993 folks have slipped and don't see what's happening to their own model P-Car. Ownership issues of 993's are becoming more like 928's with each year and new Porsche model.

As a positive thing to 928 owners, we've come far enough along that we assist each other on doing hard part work, something we'll have to wait and see takes hold with 993'ers. As of right now, I sure seems like 993 ownership has trended to be about "bling" bolt on items and talking about what "stage" so and so you has recently been bolted on. The more hard core 993 folks appear to have moved on.

Personally, I like where I have landed here in the 928 "cult". I find the 928 quite nimble on both raod and track. I really enjoy having a V8 Porsche and the torque / sounds that come with. This may damn me amongst my 911 friends, but seeing how the older Porsche's are trending, it's sort of a "what ever"...

I cross posted links in order to get some good comment from the 928 guys on our cars. I knew there would be some flammage on both sides and hope it stays pretty civil.

I'd like to have a 993 also.

Once you have one that's been gone through from end-to-end - not just 'fixed' but has had all the twenty-year old rubber, sensors, and other worn-out stuff replaced the 928 is as rock solid and reliable as just about any other car. It'll probably be more reliable than when it was new.

The bitch of it is getting there.

I've had my '91 for almost 12 years now. I've has almost 90k miles on it now with 70k of them mine. It has been more reliable than the several VWs and Audis bought new that I've owned concurrently. It is however, time for me to replace all those worn-out bits. I'm about half-way done now with the other half scheduled for this winter: A/C and some suspension work. Maybe the torque tube. Then I'll probably be good for another 8 to 10 years.

If you're a DIY-guy and don't mind a year or two of restoration then you too can get to 928 nirvana.

OTOH, if you are not, you are close enough to Philly that you have another alternative if you have a medium-sized bag of cash to get it all done in one shot.

I have yet to drive a 993 so I can't comment on it but I do want one.

Now the 928, it is by far one of the best driving cars I've ever experienced. Many say that the 928 doesn't involve the driver but that's not really true. The reality is that a 928 won't involve the driver until the driver is ready to be involved.

In other words, if you drive the 928 at just a rapid pace without asking too much of it, it's relaxing and comfortable. But if you stomp on the pedal you better be damn sure you're paying attention because the car will be flying in a matter of seconds and I promise your adrenaline will be pumping and your face will be stuck in a permagrin hours after you've parked the car. It carves corners with precision and the feedback makes it very predictable even at its limits. It really is the true definition of a GT.

As a few have said before, the car far exceeds the typical driver. I've yet to see what the limits are and I think it will scare the **** out of me before it gets there.

He can do anything necessary on a 928. http://members.rennlist.com/captearlg/91GT1.html

If I lived within a couple hours drive I'd have never learned to even change my oil.
