The rear alloy bumper and USA shocks is all about the 5 MPH crash tests......no frame structure damage at less than 5 MPH. Much more than that and the rear frame rails buckles anyway as the energy is transfered to the frame. Real race cars run fuel cells in metal cans and are often mounted a bit forward. More importantly the fuel pumps are usually not mounted behind and down low on race cars. The aftermarket none flexible fiberglass covers are not the same shape as a real one and the alloy rear bumper must be modified to fit (clear the taillight housings) as I recall.

Jim,

Are you saying don"t worry about it or should I add some protection to the gas tank.

I would probably mount Euro tubes (solid pipes) and the alloy cross bar for a street driven car.... just get it from the Lemons race car ! Your rear cap is bolted on ? has seams .

Cap may be glued I have not been able to see any bolts from the underneath. There is a couple of panels I would need to remove to check but for the most part it seems like a solid cap glued on.
I guess I need to go down and help Mike make lemon-aid.

Mark still hasn't painted that thing?

How do I get on the "needs help" list?

keep in mind that the 928 uses a colapsible plastic tank, very similar to the early 996 gt3 cup cars. sure it is much safer to have a bumper in there, but that chassis is extremely strong right there and again, the tank is made of a soft , strong plastic. Anderson now has a fuel cell, but didnt for a very long time. I dont have one and have had some rear impacts that the plastic bumper along helped out with.
Anderson took a hit at LV in the rear when he had the plastic stock tank and nothing happened.

Again, safer is better, but there certainly is an argument for the safety of the 928 gas tank even without the added protection of the bumper installed.
