Colin,

Why can't you use the 60-2 trigger wheel with Megasquirt / EDIS ? I know the MS can use it, what is it about the EDIS that doesn't allow it? The reason I ask is that if it is possible to use the 60-2 wheel, couldn't we fit the stock S4 trigger wheel and flywheel to the 85-86 engine and save the hassle? I just fit the 36-1 wheel in the same spot you did but I don't like that solution for a street car. Using a stock wheel would also allow the use of the stock sensor or at least the stock sensor location.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Nevermind. My search finally found an answer. I found this post by another member who also happens to work at DIY Autotune.

If you're firing your ignition directly with MS you can use a 36-1, a 60-2, or many other wheel patterns. Those would be the two most common to be fitted to a motor if you weren't using the factory trigger mechanism.

If you're using EDIS, you must use a 36-1 wheel. The EDIS module won't know what to do with anything else. It's an OEM designed piece, not programmable, only uses a wheel similar to what it was designed to work with.

We do offer 36-1 trigger wheels if needed. If you need a 60-2 the wheels above look great...

So if you keep the stock coil set up then you can use the 60-2 wheel on the S4?

That's exactly what I did on mine.

If you go with EDIS you need the 36-1 tothed ring.

If you retain the stock ign system, which I dislike, then you can keep the 60-2 or even go to full COP you can use the 60-2.

The 36-1 ring on the front of the engine is actually lighter and closer to the center than the porsche ring. Thus lightening and moving the rotating mass more towards the center.

All standalone systems can use the stock VR sensor.

I really don't want to lose my A/C. I'll probably replace the stock ring with a 36-1 ring in the stock location and use the stock sensor when that time comes.

You can still use the AC and run a 36-1 wheel. I bought this from triggerwheels.com in the UK and welded it to the end of the pulley:

I also used a Ford pick up sensor, as it is really chaep and has a connector directly on the unit. For the cable, I used a shielded headphones stereo cable; it is best to use shielded cable for the small signals the pick up unit sends to the ECU.

The injector timing will be dependant on injector size, fuel pressure, targetted AFR, etc.

So this is something that one must tune to themselves.

Thanks Colin. I'm looking to compare my numbers. Batch fire pintle injectors aren't going to vary too much at idle speed 4.5-4.7L. Anyone else got their MS engine started yet?

I have had my 84 Euro running on MS fuel only for about 7 months now. I plan to do the Edis conversion in the next couple of weeks. I was definately happy with the conversion.

I am going to add to this thread instead of creating another one.

A local fellow was directed my way via JDS Porsche (Thanks John!).
He had purchased an 89 S4 engine and installed it into his widebody 86 928. But his friend who was doing some of the work didnt understand any of the electrics. And there were no brains that could be purchased with this engine. So after contacting me, I give him a list of different options.
A) run the 89 engine with S3 brains. Not really optimum, and wont give the best power.
B) run the 89 wiring and brains in the car. Much better, but it is still older technology and he would be requiring a new MAF, and the regular replacement pieces.
C) conversion to standalone EFI.

I fully detailed what was involved in each process and the positives and negatives to each setup. After much deliberation the owner has decided to go to MS EFI (after I got it running on my LH/EZK).

We will be doing MS 3.57 W/ Wasted spark COP.
I will be ordering all of the parts needed tomorrow. And once they arrive the car will be converted immediately.
I drove the car to my house yesterday on the LH/EZK, and thankfully it was not a very far drive as the MAF is in really bad shape and the CPS was giving us issues too.

I will try to document a little more during this installation, but will say sorry now as I tend to dive in and forget to take pictures.
