Well it's been a while since I've updated my maintanence list (first post)
It's been a really quiet year with Perl. Haven't driven it much beyond SITM '09, last year, where I developed an idle issue.
Last seen in action, SITM '09

Later took Perl to my mechanic, unintentionally, following a highway stall-out/cut-out where I coasted it to his shop, just off the highway. His diagnosis was a leaky #3 intake valve.
I was quite disappointed all around, and just wasn't prepared to sink deeper into my wallet.
So Project Perl took a pregnant pause, and I regenerated myself with my family and other projects.

In the meantime, I received lots of feedback from many knowledgable Rennlisters who though my mech's diagnosis may be bunk. I decided to prepare for a self-diagnosis of Perl. Planned it for this month (May)

I started with a WSM troubleshoot of the LH/EZK inputs as I wanted to rule out some common offenders (WOT/Idle switch). Ruled out other variables by replacing key relays, cleaning grounds.
Then considered what I haven't replaced, which I figured must be a short considering my first year of ownership (ouch $$). Targeted spark plugs and wires, fuel injectors.

So Chris (Landseer) came over last Saturday to offer a hand and moral support. On the list, plugs and plug wires. Decided WYAIT to check (again) caps/rotors and timing. All good. Pulled the coil wire on the right side and found massive corrosion.
I looked at Chris and asked "will this do it?". He replied "Hell yes!"

So got everything button back up with a little help from Chris and my 3yr old daugher Quinn.

Fired right up and ran very well! Smooth. No rough running, no idle stall.

Took it for a spin and it felt great to be back behind the wheel of Perl. Ran into a hot start/no start situation and will be dealing with that this weekend.

Good new is it should be a relatively simple fix. I'm guessing ignition swtich. We'll see. Thanks again for listening.

Re: your hot start issues, check your Temp II. Looking forward to seeing you and Pearl at SITM. You can buy me beer.

I had no idea how much work you put into this last year before Sharks. All I know this was my favorite color of the show... every year I seem to fall in love with another.

Anyhow, hope to see you again this year!

Nice update Jim! Btw, thanks for the historical sale info on the Bluemax - got it yesterday. Hard to believe it's been a year now! I just wish I could go for a spin - we have about 3 inches of new snow, cold temps and gray skies - It's January in May right now.

Default And the winner is....

AO called Temp2, I called ignition switch. Planned for CPS as well.

Guess what....? None of the above. But close on the latter. The harness 3-pin the plugs into the CPS was in BAD shape. Isolated the wires with insulation and no more intermittent no/start. Yea!

Cleaned those 2 hard-to-reach ground points at the back of the engine block on the crankcase. Landseer told be about them, and man, those buggers were hard to get at.
Makes no sense to me that Porsche would located two key grounds there. And yes, they were corroded, but not badly.

Also, those inner door hinges are a bugger to replace. The part itself is just a bad design.

So, things are moving along nicely.... Should have pod R&R done by mid-week.

Is that your Temp2 plug? Mine looked like that until I replaced the plug too. Must be CPS month as well - it disintegrated Saturday. Mine is jerry rigged together with zip ties of all things until my replacement gets here from Roger. My MAF plug also looked like that plug so that's being fixed too with a new plug and heat shrink tubing.

Default Lizard's short shift kit

Last night I removed the center console and installed Lizard's short shift kit.

I have to say it was a pretty easy installation. Funny thing is, I thought is was easier than installing a standard short shift (aligning the 2 pins to the 2 holes and 4 bushings can be a REAL pain).

This thing is the bee's knees, man! Now, I haven't driven it yet, but just running through gates in static show's not only a noticable improvement, but an honest transformation. You can really feel the gates.
You know those R&T articles from back in the day that dog the 928's shift "feel"? Well, they're is no more concern. I'm impressed.

Now I have to install those bronze bushings for the rear coupler. I have the OE plastic ones in there now.

Thanks Colin, Thanks Roger.

Next on the list, install deck, amp and sub.

FWIW, Vacuum diaphrams had been done previously.

Finished pod rehab and deck install.

Changed the odo gear so I figured I would document odometer mileage here as to make sure there is no odometer mile discrepancy.

Other than that, have a few small details to work out this week prior to getting inspected. Need to find a windshield as my local source could only come up with a Pilkington this time.
If anyone has a good lead on a Sigla or Sekurit windscreen, please let me know, thanks.

Default Finally took her for a real test drive...

She runs great!

The Lizard short shifter is amazing. Took a little adjustment at the rear coupler to get it just right. I"ll post my report on that in a new thread.

This is the first year, my 3 year old daughter Quinn, was really into helping me work on cars
She was so exited when we took Perl for a little cruise thru the neighborhood yesterday eve. She got to sit in the front seat.

Daddy's Little Helper! You've got a real cutie there; even treats the tools right.

And getting her used to fuse panel work, that's the way to start her off!

"Electrical problems on a 928? Heck, my 3-year old handles those."
