Default Holbert race car gets 305s up front with no body work (kind of)

One of the winter projects was to get more meat up front to increase the handling capabilities of the car. It doesnt do that bad with the 275s and 305s in the rear, but there are some tracks where it just doesnt have the front grip for braking and for some turns (usually the medium speed turns) to keep up with the Jones, who are bringing faster and faster cars out to our races every month.

I was thinking about how Anderson did his, and then thought, "what if i could just move the fender out slightly, and deform things so that the fender edge came out a modest 1/2" . Well, by loosening all the fender bolts and the ones that hold the fender near the door front, i was able to pull the fender out about 1" down there, which along with a slight movement of the fender as it meets the hood, i was able to fit the 12" wide 305 tires. (275s are around11" wide) . The downside is now there is a little fender gap that looks reminisant of the 944 racer front fenders. (kind of like the gill of a shark )

However, the alternative was fender cutting and painting and the the paint on the old holbert car is still pretty good. Also, it can be put back to a stock look by removing two bolts.

Now i have 1" more meat on the front, along with the front track being near 1" wider. It also can help the 275s when i use them as i can put a spacer up front to still have the wider front track for commuting to the track and practices.
The possible downsides are that the tires now are 1" taller. (dont know if that will effect anything) and they weigh 5lbs heavier a side for a total of 10lbs more weight up front. (like having 20lbs of weight in the car, because its rotating as it relates to acceleration effects)

Here is what it kind of looks like.

Are you using the gap between the fender and hood for more cooling? LOL. Hope it works

the gap in the hood /fender isnt that much. the real gap near the door /fender area could be cut out in the fender area, to do a popular vent technique for venting high pressure air in the wheel well.

It's a prototype car (Projekt 928). I'm assuming they're engine vents.

How does it look in the front..... by the bumper and hood...I might have to try this...... my 305's are off the front now (waiting for MK) and the 295 R888's should be on by now....

I doubt it's in Canada. We have plenty of places like that in Germany and the license plate is German also. Registered to the city of Boeblingen which is the same region as Weissach.

Good work Mark...that is an excellent way around the more meat up front w/o having to modify! YEA! I think you will really like the increased front traction feel!

That pic is from the Projekt 928 book...probably during the winter testing they did. I believe the depressions on the fenders were to let air into the engine..Side mounted air filters..I'll have to dig out my book and take a look again..

Just checked..no discussion on the indents..but early prototype engines had air filter boxes in that area....

Unlikely to be air inlets, I reckon.

Yea..I saw that...odd place for indents...don't think it's a low pressure zone..or high for that matter...

It looks GREAT. you really cant notice the change, unless you catch the car at the right angle. PLUS, this change might be a cool change if little vents can be stuck in the fenders at the gap showing that its supposed to be there for aero.
the hood seam looks like an american car now. no changes on the front of the bumper. actually the first side i started with i had all the bolts off the fender. turns out, any widening of the fender at the front, actually makes the fender lip go in. (wrong way) . So, the only thing you need to do is loosen all the fender bolts on rail in the engine bay. and only the rear mounting bolts as it ataches to the body by the door front. you pull the bottom of the fender out and mount it on the inside of its bottom mount. (bolt reversal direction)
anyway, they fit perfect and allow for 1/4" spacers for the normal 275 tires.

Your 335s are ready for the trade. they are in pefect shape. hope the 305s look good!
