Default S4/GT small resonators on an 86.5

In place of the big mombos (AKA GTS resonators).

Surpisingly, it is not really much louder, just a bit more growly when floored. I was hoping/fearing a big increase in sound, but nooooo. It's quite a bit lighter in weight, though! (In a way, it might be quieter, because I used to hear rumbling inside the big resonators at low speeds, but that is gone now.)

The right side fits up to the pumkin exactly. The left side outlet pipe is longer, and farther out, and has to be modified.

Cut the resonator outlet through the second weld line. After grinding the rest of the weld away, the remainder of the outlet pipe can be pulled out. Slide the pipe back into the resonator about 1" and install to see how much it needs to be shortened. 1-7/8" cut out, and the tip rotated ~1/8" downward, and it lined right up. Took it off, and tack welded all the way around with stainless steel MIG wire, and it was done!

I was in a hurry to get somewhere, so it was done 'in about an hour'.

HeX-pipe with bypass valve, 'GT' mufflers, de-baffled rear muffler (RMBMat).

Try a RMB?

My car with stock 'smaller' resonators and with the X and RMB.............LOUD!!!

Tried the OEM rear muffler; too quiet..............GT rear muffler; perfect IMHO.

What am I missing here?

Big resonators vs GT/small resonators?

I've tried to find out (small real world sample) on what '87+'s have the smaller vs the larger resonators and it seems to be a mix with no sequence on what year got the smaller/larger resonators.

Got the smaller on both my '88 and the '90, but have seen many around here that have larger resonators............there is no pattern.

Or did I miss the entire purpose of this thread? Could be that...........sorry

I think that Ken is bored again

playing more with the exhaust Ken,

We need to get you to install an aftermarket EFI setup in the car, that should keep you busy for a month, Though I dont know if Louie wants that much company

Hey! I've been meaning to do this for a long time, but didn't get the exhaust until a few days ago. Anyway, I'm just showing how to adapt the later exhausts to the otherwise superior '86.5.

Just by looking at them, I think the mombos might actually flow better. The smaller resonator has a nasty 80ish° turn into it, whereas the big ones have a smooth curve through the body.

Ken, you could ver easily take that 80 deg bend out of them, just a couple simple cuts and welds!

Why are you in front of the computer! (why am I in front of the computer!)

About a month ago I put a set on my '85. I have to pull it off again and make one or two more mods so it will fit better.

I was thinking that, especially given your findings with respect to sound. But then maybe the weight savings makes it a wash.
