I'm in for the South Carolina event, I'd be happy to help in the pits.

OK, I wasn't clear enough...

When I told firemed that "we" could get the car ready for the South Carolina event, I was talking about "Wally and Mike" and anyone else who wanted to get involved with Mike's project. I have NOT discussed this with David or Jeannie, and have no idea whether or not they have any interest...

Sorry about that!

I need to be more specific who I mean when I say "we".

I'm down to help wrench or drive if you can make the SC Or New Orleans events. Have a trailer now if that helps. What part of Florida are you in?

Aaarg Matey....
Little did you know... you inherited the roll from Mark when you bought the trailer

Seriously... Thank you for the offer! All hands appreciated!
Some of the Florida crowd will be helping fit her up too....
I'm going to try and get a hand from Mark - If nothing else maybe he can teach this ol' phart to drive

Wally - PM sent - it works out great, My bad.... you could surprise Dave and Jeannie with a road trip - har har

The whole idea to this effort is having fun.... The "investment" is made. I happened to have lucked into the "classic" 928 at a remarkable price! I love the idea of sharing the fun - and I think everyone here knows my attitude...
Any excuse for a party!
The Lemons is after all the classic "don't show if your serious" race...
From what I read - most of us here in the Renny 928 world can handle this
Shawn has agreed to help out with some "custom welding" and build a cage - anyone with a tubing bender would be a plus...
We might have a suit or two lined up to borrow... I'll consider buying one if I can also.
I have a good asst of rims and tires, maybe even some with tread
I'm used to the boaters K mart... errrr Dumpster diving.... but I don't think we will find many good tires at the lemons Har Har

It's do-able and we have time to get ready - I would love to make both SC races and the LA one too!
The biggest trick will be not to get crunched!

Lets just DO IT!
Heres the "before" picture.... It looks like I may have been taken for my $300
I'll keep a diary of dated pictures - I'm sure they will believe the price
Not many people would admit to owning this

A dry nitrous would be cheap and might even survive a race!

As I stated on the phone yesterday, count me in.

As for performance mods. I think we would be crazy if we tried any of them. Longevity is the key to this one I believe. We may want to rig up some sort of brake cooling ducts and put some good pads on her. As for tires, I think street tires with a long life span would be the way to go.

Mike, there are a few threads here on rennlist about the 24 hours of lemons. I believe there was a 944 group that competed last year with a Honda CRX. I'm sure they could teach us alot due to their experience. I know one of their problems was a blown radiator hose. They were able to run to a local parts store and get a replacement. We won't be so lucky in most cases. I'll see if I can dig up the thread.

This is going to be awesome. I think the hardest part is going to be having all of us together for that long without cracking open any rum.

And one 928'er. Actually our CRX Team Zappa was a 928, 944, 944/911 and VW crew. But the VW guy had just sold his 996 so we let him in.

Do it! It's the most fun you'll ever have, what a great event. They are running Carolina twice this year and I'm planning on running in both events, just not with a 928 unless something weird happens. Longevity is everything, make sure the car is in good running shape, as you'll be doing several hundred laps. We toasted three heads at the last event, thank goodness for cheap Honda spares.

As for "destroying" the car, I don't believe it. Some minor bumps in the course of the race, but that's racing. It's not a demolition derby, and the racing was really pretty good and very courteous for the most part. The guys who won People's Curse were not that courteous, treated it like a demo derby, and had a suspicious amount of power. And yes, all prizes are paid in nickels. I can't wait!

Since the car can and will be bought for $500 after the race, we don't want to make it pretty! No unnecessary cleaning, no paint, no body work, no visible new parts. When the car is claimed, we have thirty minutes to strip out the "safety gear", which includes wheels, tires and brakes, in addition to the belts, extinguishers, etc.

Awesome - Thanks Mark....
Parts will be easily available... I'll just drive the $1,000 '78 Euro

Fabio - I'm replacing the vacuum hoses on the '78 5spd today, and working on the 86.5 Thur and Friday...next week is my Kelly day, so I have Sunday thru Thursday off to gut the car and pull the engine - if you want to come by
I thought alchohol powered referred to the drivers.....

I love the 24 hours of LeMons I was going to enter the one in Stafford CT (July 10-11 ? ). Unfortunately I won't be around now. A Shark wound be awesome. Remember the salvage rule. Any parts you sell come off the paid price of the car. On a Shark You can pay 1500 sell parts and still have a racer for free.
read the rules the 500 does not include Brakes,Tires, or anything safety.
Good luck.

Something tells me the Fabio "camouflage" scheme paint job won't make it "too pretty".... more like blending in with other wrecks.....
Just sayin

Awesome video Fabio - I would love to get it together for a Rennwish / Make a Wish donation! Any ideas on that would be greatly appreciated!

If it's bought, one of the tools I'll use to take out the roll cage and seats will be a sawsall - and a quick lesson in extrication with a roof peel will follow... J/K...

Headed out to the shark cave..........................................

I would love to but I am in VA for thanksgiving.

I'm sure when they wrote the rule that allows 30 min. to take offg the parts, they weren't expecting us to bring a firefighter with alot of extraction experience.

Car & Driver covers this each year, and has entered a car more than once; they did really well with an old RX-7 until, and correct me if I'm wrong, they cracked a radiator, or something like that.

This is a kick@$$ idea. Good luck!

An Rx7 won the last event at Carolina. They weren't the fastest but they were the most consistent, never broke down and ran long stints. Just lap after lap until they were ahead of everyone. As for the claim, the race organizers (not the racers) can claim any car for $500 but it would take something pretty serious for them to do that. I don't think any cars were claimed in my race. What they prefer to do instead is assess penalty laps to any cars deemed cheaters. Like the spec Miata being passed off as a total/recovery - 200 lap penalty. Or the car with the RMT who tried to pass it off as exhaust tubing - 800 lap penalty. Since the winner cover something over 500 laps, that effectively ruins their chances at doing well.

We finished 35th/367 laps, despite losing about 4 hours running time with our reliability problems. When we were running we were one of the fastest cars there and could outbrake almost everyone, so we had a good shot if we hadn't broken...but we did finish on-track. Consistency and reliability are king!

[edit] and yes brakes, wheels, tires and safety are free. We spent a lot of money there, so our $500 car was more like $4000 when we were done. But brakes and grip were outstanding. It's a short track so absolute speed isn't that important.

Thanks Mark,
i guess one of my main questions would be - Can I install the spare S3 suspension because it is "needed" for the S4 brakes?
Aside from anything else the car shouldn't come anywhere near the $500 budget. I should be able to install new hoses, belts, steel ball joints, change all the fluids, and the like just from selling the headlights and few other parts. Well within budget!
