autozone also sells this thing and it doesnt say its a Bosch part, but when i got mine last year it was sure enough "Bosch"

Good tips! Especially for the cheap suppliers!

Mine was just replaced - the old one was oxidized (it's aluminum, right?) so badly nothing seemed to move. I haven't tested it yet, but I will just to see (I know it wasn't doing much). The mechanic said it looked like the engine V was full of soapy water at some point (wasn't me), which may have caused the oxidation.

I think the part should have been designed to mount somewhere more accessible - it's so critical and such a common fault (over time) that it's just cruel to bury it like they did. On the other hand, once you've replaced it, I wouldn't bother moving it - it really is a 15-year part.

I've got big butcher's hands, so I can't get more than a couple of fingers under the intake. Maybe I should have a kid after all... just so they can fix the things I can't get to.

I just used a 12V jump pack...so I am sure there was plenty of amps behind it and it still was stuck before I cleaned it.....

Figures its $150 AFTER I paid nearly $300.....oh well....it works great now!

The ISV may be my problem with idle surge I found a site Imparts Online shows the bosch # 0280140509 for 114.00 ( shows it is for 1989 BMW 525I)
AutoZone shows the part for 87 S4 139.99 & 166.99 for BMW...interesting!

85 to 86 ISV is 928 606 161 00 = Bosch 0280 140 509 - $125 my price
87 to 95 ISV is 928 606 161 01 = Bosch 0280 140 515 - $289 my price.

So what is the difference between the 161 00 & 161 01 that costs $164 ????

Yes, the '85-'86 use a 3-wire ISV while the '87-'95 use a 2-wire one. Big difference. I suppose the price difference also has something to do with the LH version. Lots of cars have LH 2.2 like the earlier 928, but only the 928 has LH 2.3 (too bad they didn't move to 2.4.x, it's sooo much better).

It's worth it if that's what's keeping a car from driving.

Figure out that you get 100,000 miles from this part, at $300. Hmmm, long division! OK, carry the six, and it works out to $0.003/mile if my math is correct. Add it to the list of WYAIT maintenance parts.

To the comment that it's cycling multiple times open and closed-- it doesn't. The actuator itself receives a stream of pulses at a fixed frequency OK, but the width of the pulses varies. Wider pulses mean that the valve stays open further, narrower it's open less. The inertia in the mechanism, the spring tension, and the charge/discharge time on the magnet inside are the keys to the way it works.

The correct one for LH2.3 is Bosch 0280 140 515 which is not available from your first link and is $319 at the second one.
