Default '84 euro chip install

I got one of Porken's chips for my '84 Euro. I had his EZF'r switches in for a while, but I thought I would go ahead and upgrade to the chip. I took my brain apart, and there does not seem to be a plastic keeper for the chip like my S4. The chip is soldered to the board from the back side. WTF? Is this right? Can someone confirm? John Speake?

Should I just heat up the solder and swap the chips, or is this going to take a professional?

Thanks

Weird! I heard the '84 LH is unique, but I thought the EZFs were all the same.

It might be easiest to source another EZF?

Pics?

Early '84 LH2.2 and EZF often have soldered in EPROMs. I usually fit an EPROM socket.

Does Ken's chip also suit a 16v Euro ? Didn't know he had access to one to develop an EZF chip ?

I have 2 brains for this Euro. The one in the car has the P/N 928 618 124 00. The extra one I have has this same number, but it has a label sticker added over the top of this number with 928 618 124 03. Which is the correct brain for the '84 Euro? Is the 00 the early version and the 03 the later version? Will the 03 version have the chip socket versus the soldered one? Which one should I be using?

Hello Mike
The 00 was the early one, this was superceded by the 03. Both are correct fitting for the Euro 16v.

So you can use the 03 if more convenient, it will almost certainly have an EPROM in a socket.

Not quite as rare as an S3 in England, I should think.

In essence, Mike has already tested the 16V EZF'r chip, with the wired version of the EZF'r tweak(s), IE. WOT map disconnect, and added advance over the stock S2 cruise map. Now he has a S2 mapped chip, with the tweaks programmed in.

The EZF'r chip has a few more benefits over the wired tweak, and for S3s, is a definite improvement over the 'pingy' AA/clone chip.

(S3 w/X-pipe dyno)

Smoother idle
Easier starting
More HP, more TQ
No pinging, even with 'Plus'
No lurching when selecting a gear
Disable airbox temp retard if desired

Well yes, S3's are like hen's teeth over here. I have heard of one in England and that was a US model. There are a couple in continental Europpe, but even there they are rare.

I expect Erkka has the sales figures :-)

Hi,

my 928 S2 is a 84 to.<----- Can I use the LH controller from my 85 partscar for Ken´s chip?Is the higher compression (10,4:1)no problem?
My S3 5 Speed has low compression and drive with normal gas,the euro S2 needs Super plus 98 Octan.

Number of '86 ROW 32V is still unknown. According to Jörg Austen, back in January 1st 2003 there were 85 S2 kat models registered in Germany. I believe these are S3 which were still left in German plates back then. Then again, some might be US models in Germany too. I know for a fact that at least one ROW 32V S had lost its original engine due to 2/6 bearing failure before that time as said engine is in my garage in pieces now after being stored at German VW dealer for more than a decade.

The chip is fited to the EZF controller only. Either the 928 618124 00 or 03 are OK, as previously stated...

Thank you John!

My mainconcern is a to lean working engine in the S2 with the chip. Here in north Germany is driving on the autobahn on some days highspeedfun.
I don´t need an broken engine.

@Erkka

I know a few ROW S3 here in the Porsche Club 928.But most S3 are automatic.S3 5speed are very rare.
I know my car and one car in very bad condition was on ebay this year.I think 5 speed ROW are under 10 cars in Germany.

Hello Karsten
I understand your concerns. My measurements show that fuelling of the 00 LH compared to the later 02 LH is the same.

The main reasons that your Euro LH 16v could posssibly run weak would be
1) MAF aged weak.
2) Injectors not flowing fully.

When I attended to each of these in turn on my Euro S2, there was a significant improvement in throttle response each which I assumed was that previously the fuelling was on the weak side.

Hi John,

my gaspressure is ok.Ignitionparts are all new.(ignitioncables and so on)

I think i send my 3 MAF´s to Harald Stein. He can check them and I´m on the safe side.
One is broken. The car(928 S3) runs on gasoline but with LPG the controller set back to gasoline. With the MAF from my partscar the engine runs smooth with LPG.

@Ken

Doctor t´s car is nice but I must finish my own 3 building sites! ;-)

70000sek=~7000 €=~9000 $ It´s a bargain! He finish a lot of things and the new owner must do cosmetics.
