How much 928 for $5000?
I have been watching craigslist, ebay, and autotrader classics for about two weeks and it looks like I can get a car that is a decent runner and looker for around $5000. Is that far fetched? Specifically I am looking for a 78-early 80s 5speed. Ideally with no side guards.

They can be found for $5000....
Then you put a few grand into it or just find one for a little bit more with the bugs worked out of it
goodluck
I found this one for $5000 but it sat for 10 years and needed some work

Priced too high for a '78 unless a pristine Euro that's a 9/10. Get the PPI to protect yourself and find out what's it really worth (i.e., how much more you're going to have to put in it).

I think you can get a lot of 928 for $5K. In fact for $5k I think you get more value with a 928 than almost any other car on the road today. I would strongly recommend buying one from somebody here on the boards. It allows you to somewhat check the history of the car and you know that the seller is a 928 fan.
I don't know where you're located but you might check this one out. I have no affiliation with the seller, no interest, blah blah but it seems like a solid buy.

This is a lot of car for the money. 86.5 = bigger brakes, better suspension & great heads. It's an automatic but I drive my auto manually when I'm playing around and just put it in D when I'm cruising. Best of both worlds in my opinion. This guy is a board member. His Rennlist name is jcb928.No affiliation. I think he wants $3500.00 for it. I'd buy it but I already have 2 Porsches. My wife would SH$T!!!

5 speeds tend to have lived harder lives for some reason. Ask me how I know .
I don't think you can plan on plunking down less than $6-8k when all is said and done for a strong, dependable early 928. If you find one for less than $5k it might need $2-$5k worth of deferred maintenance. If you find one for $8k it should be in great shape and require nothing but a turn of the key.

Check out Cajun's for $7k. I still say that is a steal of a deal. And I don't even know the guy. It doesn't fit your parameters, but it's a helluva machine.
For $5k, you should be able to find any number of nicely sorted OB 928 5 spds; they won't be Rixter-worthy Jems, but they'll definitely get the job done.

Cajuns looks nice but thats out of my price range by a lot when you add the timing belt and water pump. Also, really only looking at 5 speeds.
Can someone tell me exactly when the body style was updated from the slightly sharper angles on the very early models to the softer look of the mid eighties? Is it just the addition of the spoiler in front that I am seeing?
This is body style I am really interested in:

anyone seen this car on ebay?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-...3A1|240%3A1318
"This car has actually 66415 original miles and not 166415 miles. The reason behind it is that some modifications where done to this car like custom headers, ingnition racing system, electronic fans and a better CIS fuel injection. This 928 has much more torque that a stock one and it is much faster for that reason the stock odometer could not read the exact speed so a different speedometer was installed. All this happened in the very first year the car was purchased. When the mileage reached about the 40000 the odometer moved automatically to 140000."
This worries me
