that doesnt make a whole lot of sense, in that at part throttle, its almost impossible to get the engine hot, no matter what the mixture. (unless you are dentonating all over the place)
I dont think a MAF can make a car run hot, especially at part throttle, like climbing a hill. the 02 sensor is doing most of the work to keep the average around lean stoich anyway.
sometheing else happened with your "hot" car after it didnt run for a while.

finally the car sat for a winter in the garage then it wouldnt run ,

The O2 sensor has a range of compensation. Once it reaches +20%, it cannot adjust the mixture any more. If the MAF is out of calibration enough, the car will still run lean at part throttle closed loop and the car may overheat because of this.

MK when the owner was drivng his car up the hill using most of the throttle to keep moving at 60MPH is common ,
anyhow he was fighting this running hot issue till the MAF finally went so far out of calibration the engine wouldnt run .
This was also on my list of things that needed to be done to this particular car an intake refresh its an 87 BTW, the intake refresh still needs doing including replacement of all the usual intake related parts.
