Default Instrument Pod Removal

Hello. Can anyone refer me to a thread or on-line posting of instructions for removing the instrument pod cover on and 82 928? I have searched for threads, but had difficulty finding one.

(The lights that illuminate the gauages are not functioning, and the odometer is not working. So I need to get at the instrument assembly.)

PS--The light in the heater/AC controls is not working either. Aren't they connected to the same dimmer? Perhaps there is a problem other than the bulbs in the instrument cluster themselves? I have checked/replaced the fuse, and the light switch light which is on the same fuse is working. So that isn't it.

Thanks!

Check the dimmer wheel. If one of the two wires to it are disconnected no lights. For the pod removal pull center pad off (horn) remove steering wheel (27mm?)
Remove lower steering cover (3 phillip screw)
Loosen blinker clamp (7 or 8 mm)
Remove lower steering cover surrounding dimmer and wiper delay(2phillip screw)
Remove 2 10mm bolts holding center bottom of pod
Remove 2 screws (one near ign switch other on opposite side)
Disconnect blinker assembly on one side, pull off and let hang

Pod can now be tilted enough to get hand behind to disconnect the 3 plugs for instruments. Be careful as newer cars have a lock latch that needs to be pushed to release plug.
With these removed you can tilt the pod forward and up a bit and remove cluster from rear.
Installation is reverse. Hope this helps.

If the dimmer switch is broken just connect the two wires together to get dash lights I find the lights are barely bright enough with out the dimmer switch anyway

Or spray a little WD40 on the dimmer switch and roll it back and forth. That fixed the one on my '87 S4.

The speedometer has a connection in the spare tire compartment of an S4 that may need cleaning, the OB might have the same connection but I'm not sure.

If you end up having to pull the pod, I would have all new instrument bulbs on hand so you can replace them and I would recommend LEDs for the gauge lighting since they are much brighter.

Here is a picture of the gauge pod on my S4 after conversion to LEDs.

Nice pic, David, of the LEDs at work - I like it! I'm thinking of converting.

David,

Are the LEDs dimmable?

They dim only a little bit. I think you can add a dimmer switch that is compatible with LEDs.

The S4 LEDs are specially made for it (replaces all 3 reflector prisms at the bottom of the gauges). I'm not sure about OB gauge pods though. I went with the 'Cool White' color. They have red and blue alsd.

Yup, turned out to be the dimmer. I little cleaning and WD40 and it works. (Although the light in the heater/AC controls isn't coming on, so I probably have to replace a bad bulb in there.)

And...I still need to take the pod off to get to the odometer, so these instructions and the thread with pictures will be VERY helpful. (I'm assuming it is one of the little gears, which I've had to replace on my 944 also. Is there anything else easier that I should check first on an 82 928 that could be responsible for the odometer not working?)

Odo gear is a big failure item. I R&R'ed it while I was redoing my interior. Not too hard.
