Default Green 79 Potential Fuel Fire

I bought a 79 Euro recently and drove it 1000 miles back from Dayton.
Apart from a large oil leak car ran fine.

About a week ago Sean and I were moving the cars around the yard and noticed a fuel leak from the passenger side of the engine.

I took some time today to investigate further and horror upon horror this is what I found. The two flexible rubber hoses on the feed and return lines to the CIS were in bad shape someone had already effected some repairs but still used the old existing hose. The existing hose was already badly aged and well cracked. They had used band style clamps which were also cutting into the rubber hose wall.

To stop fuel squirting on to the manifold they had used a piece of sheet metal to act as a gaurd between the hoses and the manifold.

Both hoses are NLA from Porsche but once I started to dismantle them it was clear that this was an easy fix.

One hose is 5/16' and the other 3/8" (nearest non metric equiv.) and I replaced them with EFI hose and EFI clamps.
Both fittings are the barbed type and ideal for rebuilding. The original ferrules were swaged onto the hose and end fitting but very loose. They were still leak tight even though they were loose and aged.

Ferrules were easy to remove with a dremel cutting tool.

Please check your hoses!!!!!!!!!!

Wow! Sheet metal to keep it from splashing on the manifold. That's a new one on me.

*shakes head* When you found out you drove it 1000 miles like that you had to be feeling like you dodged a bullet. Or a few!

Great pics!

I was thinking the exact same thing as I read the post. Oh the irony of it all

I will contact him straightaway and I wish I had thought of that earlier 8>)

Sean & Chuck are going to be using a similar fix on the rear hoses on Chucks 79. If this all works out we have confirmed that the hoses can be replaced easily and cheaply. I will put a kit together soon for the CIS cars for those who would like to buy a kit - does not include you Firemed 8>)

Going to check the hoses on my two 78's and 80 CIS cars.

Great pics roger and a good reminder that I still need to take a closer look at mine although I'd have noticed a sheet metal shield in there by now.

Let us know when the kit's ready!

I think Roger is going to have the best fix on this.

I have 4 fuel lines that were rebuilt on my 79 in the past few years. Classic Tube actually did them all. Now, 2 have failed!!! I am NOT recommending these guys anymore. It's crazy that in 2 years time 2 lines have failed!!! The factory hoses were in dire need of replacing at the time and they were the only place I could find to do it.

As Roger said, I am going with his fix on the long fuel line that goes from the external pump to the accumulator. (3 or 4 feet long-ish)

Next to lower ball joints, probably the biggest thing you can do for long term saftey of you and your 928!!

That "fuel shield" is truly scary. Amazing at what some people will do for a quick fix.
Wait a minute I am looking at this the wrong way. This was supposed to help deflect in comming air away from the engine and help flow downward towards the bottom of the engine bay. It is a prototype "engine canard"
