87 has no diagnostic capability unless you replace the chips inside the LH and EZK with newer model year (88+) chips that added fault memory.

Two sources of 928 diagnostic testers:

JDS Porsche Spanner: Handheld tool that is quite similar to the Porsche Hammer diagnostic tool.

Theo Jennisken's 928 Diagnostic: PC software based (I use an old laptop) with an interface box. The PC allows the diagnostic program to run very quickly and allows direct access to individual tests.

I believe these sources can provide the updated chips you would need as well.

Bill,

Thanks for the info.

I am currently running with the Murf stage III chips (both in the LH and EZK) that Tim provides with the kit. Do you know whether or not these have that capability?

I would think so. Although yesterday I tried to connect to an 87 LH that had a similar chip from Tim in it, and the diagnostic testers would not connect. Maybe something else was wrong with that LH, although the car ran OK with it.

SharkTuned chips are not compatable with diagnostic testers. The SharkTuner will of course give full real time monitoring of all parameters required for fault identification.

Hi Malcom,
More tests than in the Spanner menu, and all in real time. e.g. Idle stabliser postion, O2 adaptation status, flappy position, battery voltage, with datalogging are some of the additional available.

The ST User manuals are available for download on my website.

Since this is somewhat about diagnostics.. could someone tell me where to find that 19pin diagnostic port?

From this I would say my only option using Tim's stage III chips is using the sharktuner?

Roger if your reading, do you have them in stock? Give me a call...

Also does it come with whatever I need to hook it up to an 87?

Thank you John.............just looked at the manuals on your site; great stuff.

Does Louie carry the ST and related peripherals?

It's under the same cover with the stereo amplifier - between passenger seat and door opening. Once you remove the two knurled hold-down screws and remove the cover (it's carpeted), you will see a round capped connector.

Hi Jim
On your MY87 it is in facta 12way rectangular connector mounted on the same plate that holds the LH and EZK ECUs. You will also need to upgrade your EPROMs to MY88 or later.

That's odd. A MY90 LH that George had running a Sharktuned chip did connect to the diagnostic tester and gave us the error codes we needed.

So, if a Sharktuned chip will not connect to a diagnostic tester this sounds like a real problem for people who have a Sharktuned chip and have a problem, like George, at some later date and do not own or have good access to a Sharktuner. So, the answer for them is to swap in a stock MY88+ chip for testing even though it will be way off tuning wise?

I imagine this also true for PEMs, right?

DR stocks SharkTuners.... Louie has spare ribbon cable adaptors.
