Default Just wanted the say thanks Jim!

I'm installing my Hybrid in the Alien. I had it in the car and running but it developed an oil leak. A bad oil leak. I pulled the engine back out not knowing where it was leaking from. And besides, working on this engine while it's in the car is like doing brain surgury through a coke bottle neck.

I discovered the oil seal on the pump was pushed out about 1/8". I removed the seal and cleaned up all the oil. I was out of Yamabond, which is what I usually use to assist with securing these seals. I glued the seal in with JB 4 minute epoxy to be sure the seal wouldn't push out again.

I reinstalled the engine in the Alien. I fired it off this morning and ran it about 3 minutes when I noticed oil leaking again.! I figured maybe the pressure relief valve was sticking. I pulled it and cleaned it an reinstalled the cap with an extra aluminum washer to drop the pressure. Still leaked.

I called 928 International and Jim answered. He solved my problem over the phone by asking about 3 questions in about 1 minute. Maybe most of you know that there is an early and late oil pump. I didn't.

I have a 1980 M 28/11 block bored to 5.0. During assembly I grabbed the cleanest pump of three that I have. It turns out the pump I used has the redesigned seal relief hole that gets blocked off if you install it in the early block. This causes the seal to balloon and leak.

Now that I know the leak isn't from the balancer or the block seam I pulled the pump with the engine in the car. It is possible to do but the pump just clears the firewall. It is about a half hour job with the engine in the car. I matched up my three pumps and there is a clear difference in the seal relief location. I'm installing an early cast steel pump and shelving the late model one.

So, Thanks Jim! Next time I drive the Alien out to the gold coast I'm buying!

Yes, I have both types on the bench as spare parts. I'll get some photos tomorrow and post them. Seriously, it's not something you would spot unless you were looking for it.

That sounds about right,...... experience is a good teacher, and a picture can be worth a thousand words.
I wonder if there is any info about the different pumps in the WSM

I think there is/should be a "Jim Bailey" category on Jeopardy.
