Default water pump gone?

I thought my biggest issue from a recent long run was an erratic fuel gauge (different thread) but the car 'used' ~1l of antifreeze on the 400km trip.

No idea where it leaked from so I topped it up today, started in the garage as normal but with a 'noise' in the front engine area; backed the car out and there's a small pool of antifreeze where the front middle of where the car was.

No evidence of leaks under the hood, all hoses are new.........is the w/p gone?

That's mean. Funny...but mean.

Do you have the belly pans on? Take them off and try to find exactly where the leak is coming from. My radiator is leaking but it was running down the belly pan and coming out by the front tire. I thought it was my water pump also although no noise with mine.

No belly pans..............the leak is dead centre front; could be worse I guess.....Spring

I'm sure you've already tackled this Malcolm but I've learned to check the cheap and easy fixes first. How are your hoses and clamps? They both have a finite life...especially the rubber.

Did that come out right?

It may just be the bolt that goes thru the WP and into the water jacket needs more sealant.

+1.

A loose clamp on the upper rad hose where it goes into the crossover can make you think the new water pump you just installed is leaking....

The super-simple way to find a coolant leak is to pressurize the system with a coolant system tester. 'round here you can borrow the setup from Autozone, PepBoys, etc.

most likley if the coolant is coming from dead center off of the oil pan its a water pump........... Check all of the hose connections for either a loose clamp OR a cut hose, if you were in there bending any of the hoses then a cut hose is a real possibility

Happy Thanksgiving

Hey Malcolm,
Happy Thanksgiving to you guys too!! Fall colours are peaking here for turkey day.
A guy can always use a spare engine anyway .... but I hope it's just a hose (that 1" fill line is notorious).

put a stethascope on the water pump and listen for loud noises. Scots water pump went bad and started to leak like this. track the trail down and probably it leads to the pump.

What does your coolant look like in the reservoir? When my WP failed, the impeller started grinding into the block first. If so, check the reservoir for some metal. That would be an easy sign of the failure.
