Default Installing the Momo AT Shift ****

O.k., Nothing can be easy for Angel.
I just bought this Shift **** (used) at a sweet price from 928 Int:

But the top of my Shifter Rod is even with the Shifter Tube:

and the bottom of the **** is flat:

So when I install the ****, it sits flush with the Shifter Tube and can't press the Shifter Rod down to release the Shifter.

Am I missing a part?
*squirming* Do I have to modify the Shifter Tube?

Spray some WD40 down into the center of your shift rod, then press that plastic center piece up and down. It should spring up above the shoft rod unless it is gummed up or you've lost the spring.

Are you missing a plastic rod? It should be keyed into the metal hollow shifter tube.

The Shift Rod moves up & down in the Shift Tube. Its just that the bottom of the **** rests square on the Shift Tube. Once I lock it on using the Allen screws, the **** button can't move up & down.

With the OEM ****, the button has a ramp that slides on the roller of Shift Rod which in turn pushes the Shift Rod down, unlocking the tranny. Because the top of the Shift Rod Roller sits even with the top of the Shift Tube and the bottom of the Momo **** Button rests on top of the Shift tube, it can't push the Shift Rod down.

I'm wondering if I'm supposed to modify the Shift Tube or am I missing a piece to the ****. I don't think there is anything wrong with the Car's shift because the OEM shifter, although its AFU, sits correctly and the button works properly.

On 84 and earlier you have to cut about 1/2" off the top of your lever to make this work. Time for a hacksaw or cut-off wheel.

Remove the plastic inner parts, make the cut , then reinstall the inner parts and install the **** 1/2" above where it will bottom out.

Thanks DR. That's what I was afraid of. If at a later date I wanted to replace it with the OEM shifter, how difficult would it be to R&R the Shift Tube?

Many thanks!!

Making this mod (cut) will not affect the operation of the stock shift handle if you choose to reinstall it.

You are very welcome and have a great 928 weekend!!

I wonder if you couldent get a thick piece or metal rod and cut it a bit longer than the original shift rod plastic piece , then no cutting of the shifter housing .
Try Ace hardware as they have metal rod stock you might have to bevell both ends so they fit the respective ends, Good luck

Good point but the **** already sits pretty high as it is. I'm weighing my options before I commit. I'd still like to know how difficult it would be to R&R the Shift Tube.
