Default steering rack removal?

How do you go about removing the four 10mm bolts that hold the steering rack in place? I can not get a socket or wrench on the back side if the bolt so the whole bolt just spins when I try to looson the nut. Any hints would be great.

thanks

Sam

I have a wrench with a good angle for 3 of the bolts. For the bolt by the starter harness I use a shallow socket on a 1/4 drive short ratchet.

Use an allen wrench to wedge the head of the bolt so you can undo the nut.
The allen goes between the head and the bracket.

I've been using a Craftsman socket that came with my gear wrench set. I've used it twice now for removing the steering rack on the '84 and the '88 with no problems. The head of the socket has a hex pattern that I use a combination wrench to hold in place. The socket itself is small enough to fit over each of the 4 bolts with no problem. I haven't checked recently, but these should still be avilable at Sears. Here's some pics.

+1...what Roger said. Expect to be at it a little while though. It's tricky finding just the right size allen wrench to wedge between the head and the bracket. The design of the bracket immediately around the head is smooth/concave so the allen wrench is likely to dislocate itself a few times as you torque the nut....just stay with it.....curse if it helps (did for me).

Get a dremel and cut a slot in the pottom of the bolt, near the nut. Take your time and make the slot straight and centered. Then simply put a gear wrench on the nut, and screw driver in the slot you made to counter hold. Thats how i do mine all the time, works like a champ!

I like the idea in the pics above also!
Some one should make a set like these...or like Rogs oil pan stud set with a hex key hole in the hed of the bolt.

One can easily slip a 3/8" drive stubby ratchet and 17mm socket over top of three of the nuts: if the motor mounts are somewhat collapsed, the 4th nut on the left front is obstructed by the MM 'hook' ..... loosen the 4 MM bolts on that side and jack the oil pan up ~1/4" ..... drop socket over nut .... oh, and consider replacing those soft MM's
