Around the NYC metro area, doesn't really matter if they can hear or see you, they cut you off anyway....then jam on the brakes, and give you the finger if you don't give them enough space behind them. Sometimes it really sucks living around here.

But then our cars have to compete with JoeBobBilly and his jacked-to-the-sky pick'emup truck with the 5" snort pipes shooting out the sides. Can't see around the damn things and they sure as hell can't see us, so a loud exhaust of our own is a kind of self-defense!
Now if the gas prices would just go back down, sheesh. We're highest in the country right now.

Ahhhh.... another Gentleman. Thanks Fogey1 (I believe your name is Will.)
I don't believe what you said was 'snooty', you just have a wry and clever sense of humor which is genuinely appreciated by me.
To expand this philosophical discussion about automobile noise a bit wider, isn't the reason Americans have been typically frowned by Europeans because the average American visiting there is boisterously loud and obnoxious and unwilling to adhere (or even learn) the more refined habits and customs of their country? All Americans are not like this but reputations are created by average behavior. People used to take pride in wearing fine clothing (especially on Sunday), would learn sophisticated dance, listen to complicated music by the great masters, exercise good table manners and be chivalrous toward women. The culture du jour gravitates to torn jeans and a T-shirt, wiggling your *** on a dance floor, music that goes thumpa- thumpa- thumpa- for the entire piece, shoving a fast food burger down your throat while talking and letting doors slam shut behind you while a woman is approaching the very same threshold.
Thank you but I will strive for quiet power from my car as well as other aspects of my life.
Does my attitude make me a snob of sorts? Perhaps in some people's eyes. But I prefer to view myself as a modern day Renaissance man on Rennlist.
Have I said too much? Naaaaaahhhhhhhhh.................................
All the Best,
Allen

Nobody here needs you to tell us how boorish we must be, that is usually done by the wife or girlfriend who doesn't like anything loud or fast. Thanks anyways, and go have a quiet day.
p.s. go check out Pelican parts forum (land of the broken toys), there's an empty seat over there.

"... I like NASCAR, yet I can also appreciate Mozart.
A true renaissance man can appreciate that which he does not enjoy for its own existence without denigrating it, as it adds to the value of that which he does enjoy.[/QUOTE]
The most open-minded reply posted here to date... or at least the philosophy i appreciate the most so far.....
Actually, I can appreciate a standout car for it's rumbleous sound, but there still seems to be a purveying attitude that louder is better. I cannot help but imagine how I'd feel if some moron fired up his open piped vehicle at 3 a.m. in the driveway 60 feet from my bedroom window. Sure we can all laugh and make jokes about it until it happens to us-- then we're pissed off. Well, Hello pot? This is kettle. You're black!
BTW: I am passionate about Mozart, Radiohead, Miles Davis, The Dresden Dolls, Led Zeppelin and enjoy a good Bordeaux as well as a good beer.
I am not a snob and want to rob no one of their pleasures. I just feel that my enjoyment should not be negatively impacting someone else's.... and theirs should not mine.

I think this is summing up what you wanted to say in the initial post. You don't like loud cars, loud cars annoy you and you feel they infringe on your right for quiet.
Does that sum it up?

There is something about a 928 which makes you smile either you get it or you do not....never bother trying to explain it to those who do not.....for some it might just be the sounds it makes, or how it effortlessly glides around corners, or just the beauty of the design and build. Others may enjoy the challenge of working on and fixing them ....

I believe that given certain circumstances, this would sum it up for everyone here. (Yes, I am going out on a limb over thin ice with that.)
No one wants THEIR peace disturbed when they don't want it to be.
If all cars where more powerful without sound supressing devices, why are mufflers even installed by the manufacturers? Because the mandates in place are there to protect the majority of the people's desires... not just some guy who wants to be as loud as possible. Driving on a public road is your privilege- not your right. Laws dictate certain design standards for public safety reasons. Unreasonably loud cars can not only be irritable, they can be dangerous. Too loud and you can't hear well enough to understand your surroundings well enough to avoid a bad situation. This is why you cannot wear headphones to listen to music while driving. A loud enough car passing an elderly, more timid person (who is privileged to drive as well as you) is enough to cause a potential catastrophe. Who wants to be responsible when cracking open their throttle upon passing this person to see them in the rearview mirror crashing their car because you scared the bejeezes out of them? Seriously.. All in favor of super loud pipes for audible impact know that I have a strong point. They just aren't willing to admit it.
Nothing i just wrote here is directed at you personally Sean... your post just asked a question and I have no idea what you really think. Personally, I really like all the people in the 928 community whom i have met. I am sure that each and every one of us has a point of dissent from most of the rest of the gang.
All of what i have expressed should be food for thought. Do what you want as long as no one gets hurt. Despite any differences, I appreciate all of you... and some of the replies here have had me in stitches. I can take a good ribbing now and then. And I really should be able to when I set myself up for it (as in this post.).
Sincerely and All the Best,
Allen

I like to think my car is loud enough to be noticed when I want it to be....not loud enough to scare someone else off the road.
In fact, if anyone at the upcoming October NJ fun ride thinks my car is loud enough to scare the snot out of anyone else on the road, I would like to be so informed. Especially, since it will be passing its second inspection, since we bought it, tomorrow.
(And yes, I said "passing inspection," not "getting inspected". I'm that confident of its roadworthiness and legality. )

If you have ever heard and 'felt' the Porsche V8 at WOT pushing past 6k rpm's with an X-pipe no-cats, Flowmasters and RMB, you would change your mind and revert back to killing animals with a club, living in a cave, and saying "Me Allen UGH" to everyone. It just makes you fell like a cromagnum man.

Maybe time for testosterone injections, and throw out the knitting needles.
The modern man is sensitive, and well trained by women to be a good companion to them. Time to go hunting in the V8???
