I undersand what you are saying, but I would think that the entire purpose of the difference between cam side settings, was to get them both to "0" or the same, after the block expanded. If that expansion caused a 2 degree (1 degree cam) differnce, then as long as that 2 degree difference was made up for by retarding the passenger side when cold, when they were hot, the two sides would be equal. (regardless of the cam profiles or differences)

example:
If i timed out the car for a S4 and put one cam at 1.8mm and the other at 2mm lifter depression. and then drove the car, theoretically, both cams would be slightly retarded, but equal after the engine was hot. If i could magicaly change cams at that point to 85 cams and not change settings, the cams still would both be at equal lifter depression values after 20degrees ATDC. Now, if the engine cools, why wouldnt these cams end up right where the S4 cams were before the warm up and change (i.e 2mm and 1.8mm lifter depression for 20 degrees ATDC)? and if they did, why wouldnt that be correct for the 85 cams as well.

inquiring minds want to know

There is not the same lift at 22° as there is at 20°. The S4 has different lift at 22° than the S3 has at 22°.

The GT intake cam is ground 8° advanced of the S3 - the GT has different lift at 22° than the S3 has at 22°.

What does cam lobe have to do with cams being set at .2mm or .4mm lifter depression retarded to get them to 0 when hot. why would one version of cams want the cams futher out of phase when hot?

OR (and i think i get it now, confusing cam degrees with cam lobe) does the 1.6mm vs 1.8mm correspond with the 2 degree growth?????????????

I think i might have just got what you are saying!
