Is it normal for a head gasket to look like this?

Default Is it normal for a head gasket to look like this?

I've never seen a new one to compare it to. Both heads looked the same.

hmmm.. it appears that it seales around each piston. but not each water jet. im kinda shoked it didnt blow. or is that why we have it out?

it looks like there was more water than coolant in the coolant system and it sat for a while. Clean up the surfaces, and put some new head gaskets on and fill with good coolant it should be OK

Yep, normal for high mileage 928. Mine looked the same. Don't know why it didn't leak.
It's years of head gasket touching water. Corrodes the gasket (maybe worse, the head). Part of my maintance plan is to change the anti-freeze every 3rd year. Also make sure all the ground points are cleaned.

man thats a nice looking OB engine you have there.... Whats with the funny looking airpump on top?

On a serious note, is it advised to replace the studs? I heard this is a PITA. As of now I was just planning on using new washers and bolts.

Just replace the nuts and washers.
