Default Would no LSD be a deal breaker

Given 2 fairly equivalent 928's of similar vintage, would lack of LSD be a deal breaker for 1? Apart from the LSD, the other car has some slightly greater appeal, but I could live with either.

Nope

If you plan on boosting it maybe. Otherwise IMO not a big deal.

If you are planning on autocross or track events, big difference.

On the street, not much of a difference, but preferred.

probably 99.99 % of the time you will never know the difference.... besides many of the slips have worn out the clutches by now.

Yep, it's a 220 in the options list at this point. In a car with a Weissach axle, and near perfect balance, the LSD is pretty low on the 'need to have' list.

Default PSD/LSD increases fun-factor

When the road gets steeper and narrow, and the corners tighten up, the limited slip really makes a difference in the fun-factor.
My GT has the PSD, and for mountain passes I think it is perfect, whish the Cayman had it instead of the PSM.
Especially in tight corners, the inner rear wheel becomes unweighted and would slip, loosing all traction.
With the PSD this never happens, the car just grabs the road through the corner and pushes you back in the seat on the exit.
With stiffer springs this loss of traction on the inner wheel gets worse.

For the Autobahn and schnellfahren you do not need an LSD.
Obviously..

Absolutely not! Unless you're looking to buy tickets to woodstock. In that case, a deal breaker for sure.

LSD was one of the requirements of my 928 purchase. Don't leave home without it.

Big fan of LSD but I'm not sure I would consider it a deal breaker.

What features are you giving up for the LSD vs the non LSD car?

88 vs. 89 differences, minimal condition (mint vs. "as new"), color (actually a wash, I could go either way)

Taken from the registry web site...

1989 S4 has
928 S4 automatic gets revised shift program (holds a gear longer when accelerator pedal is to the floor)

Break pad wear indicators

Radio antenna moved to roof

Computerized dash read out reports miles, outside air temp, gas mileage, trip odo, miles to empty......

The 88 is the same car as the 87 was with no apparent changes.

Do both cars have the diagnostic plug??? If not IMHO thats a big plus for the 89.

Default Correct and boring advice

It really all depends on how you intend to drive it;

If you don't plan on using it extensively on a track,
enjoy blasting through tight corners with the rear end hanging slighly out of line on full throttle,
intend to drive on snow and ice (even I don't do that to the shark - the salt and moisture would eventually kill it..),
use it as a drag racer,
or, attend a drifting contest.

If you don't do any of this, then there is no difference in performance between lsd or open diff.
And, if that is the case, then all other differences between the cars will be of greater importance for you.

Hi Jim

As I about to get a second hand LSD for my 86 S2 auto...how much are the clutches and can they be checked for wear and if so how ?

I cannot see them on the PET ?

All the best Brett

88 has 220 rear and 89 has 2.54 rear gearing. Find out what maintenance has been done, this may be the deal breaker. Good luck.

Glenn
