Default New Blood, Old Shark

Hey Everybody,

I recently aquired one of those fine Porsche 928's everybody keeps talking about. Info:
Year: 1980
Model: 928S, European
Color: Green....ish?

Here are some pics.

I got the car from a mechanic whose wife didn't want it around, so it was in running order. It looks like the engine was overhauled (no papers) and it sounds absolutely beautiful. If you'll notice, the air hoses and windshield washer assemblies are missing. This old gal needs a bit of work, but most of the hard stuff was taken care of for me. I'm excited about getting to learn how to work on a car. List of things that need attention:

Dash Lights (no illumination when lights on)
Speedometer & Tachometer, Speedo is intermittent failure
Shifter is very, very loose. (priority!)
Hood Stops, where can I get these? the little round plugs...
Throttle Body Springs
Foaming on Hood and Battery Cover

The thing is a monster to drive, my first luxury car. Unfortunately I already sunk $1500 into it for a cracked rack & pinion, alternator, hoses. A workshop did the labor. And yes, I know, racing interior *shudder*.

Congratulations, and welcome to rennlist!

You have a petrol blue shark with the extremely rare (at least in the US) PASCHA fabric.

This fabric is so rare, you can no longer get any for repairs, and some people would sell the shirt on their back to buy a set.

So, keep them in good condition, or put them in an air conditioned sturage to preserve them for future generations to look at. Oh, and search for "Pascha" here on this board - you'll find many discussions about it.

Welcome. What do you mean by "foaming on the hood and battery cover"?

The foam underneath the hood is deteriorating, as well as the foam under the carpet in the trunk.

Listen to Nicole. Cover those seats and reveal them only on special occasions, or get some solid black leather ones and store these.

The first shark I ever drove myself was this color combination. It was a one-owner 78 Euro with Automatic, retrofitted side moldings, and about 180k miles. VIN 0166. I will never forget...

The "loose shifter" is probably the "ball cup" for which you can also search on this forum. It's inexpensive parts-wise but isn't the easiest thing to get to (underneath the car above the torque tube).

Suggest going through the fuse panel (beneath passenger footwell) and replacing all fuses if not cleaning connections, may clear up some electrical issues.

Looks like a good basis for a solid shark, congrats!

That interior is highly desirable and looks in very nice condition. Don't do a thing to it and keep it nice, the fabric is unobtanium. Nice looking car!

Dude, very nice! And welcome.

Dash lights: Check the dimmer wheel with a meter. They often go bad, you can even bypass it since it's usually turned up all the way anyway.
Speedo/tach: Get used to 'tapping the pod' or look up the fix that I think Dwayne posted.
Sloppy shifting: If it's front-back it's the forward shift ball cup. If it's side-side it's the rear shift coupling. Check/replace shifter bushings under the boot as well. Also (although it doesn't affect shifting per se) you'll want to check the release arm ball cup. All of these have bushings that wear out over time. Relatively inexpensive fixes that will TRANSFORM your shifting.
Foam for under hood: Contact Rob Budd at 928leathershop
Next add the following to you bookmarks/speed dial:
928 intl, 928sRus, 928 Motorsports, 928 specialists (not necessarily in that order)

Good luck!

Woo, good advice. I guess I'll hold onto the interior for a little bit :P

I just pulled up the shifter boot to see why it was always stuck to the right position, between 4th & 5th, and it isn't the springs. From what you said, I'm guessing both shift ball cup and the rear shift coupling. There is a lot of play in both. Is it possible the entire assembly wants to stay rotated for reasons other than the rear shift coupling?

I'll head out for the dash lights tonight, play with the fuses and the dimmer a bit. Thanks for the bit on 928leather, I'll have to get foam from them. I forgot to mention the A/C being not cold, and the idle is jumpy until the car gets warmed up.
