I've been tossing around the idea of adding a 964 C4S Convertible to the garage for a year round car for the wife.

Yea, but the C4's make excellent winter beaters - not that you ever have to worry about that

Not for 20k, but I have a 97 993 Cab and I think it's great. Totally different than the 928. But the 928 gives you the option to really add some horsepower (ie. supercharger).

I've always wanted a '78 SC Targa, black on tan but I'd go with the same combo on an '84 due to valve tensioner changes.

If I had more than 20K I would get the best 993 I could find.

Cobalt's 3.6. That's my idea of the pinnacle of 911's.
I wonder if he'd let it go for $20k.

Funny you ask this question. Im actually getting bored with the 928, I think I have it sold and have my eye on a 911 already.

My first thought was nothing older than a 2003 But then money reality hits and the one i am looking at is pre 86.

I have owned quite a few 911's in the past. I don't have a one of them left now though. Great cars for what they are, but 928 it is not. I hear people saying that oh, it handles better than anything and its so fast, and it tracks like no other racecar and such. Well I've owned em' and plenty. My 928's all 7 that I have and had, were better performers in every aspect, except maybe fun factor. You really have to hold onto a 911! Anyway I would like a 993 or a 997tt. But 20g's ain't enough for either. Alot of people don't know it, but Ferry himself drove 928's as a preference. He loved em' and thought they were the company's greatest achievment at the time for streetcars.

If you can work your way to an 87-89, many consider them to be the cream of the crop, but you also might just squeeze in an early 964 for 20 K.

Broken head studs are the weak point on these cars, and weak syncros are a close second. Worn valve guides befor 100 K are also an issue, so sometimes a car with higher mileage but full services completed are the real bargains.

To replace the 928??? Probably a 996. That's the 911 that most reminds me of a 928.

To complement the 928, I'd try to get back my '89 Carrera. Totally different cars.

Under $20K: 78-79 911 SC, BR Green on Tan, or silver on black, with a whale tail

No budget: 1996-97 996 TT, Arctic (or was it called Polar?) Silver on Black. Dream car. They dipped in value over the last few years but seem to be holding between $65k and $80k, unless they're modified. Argg.

I was lookin at 911s, Boxsters, and Caymans when I decided on the 928 GTS. Spend more money and get one with the Sport Chrono PASM. If you can't afford it now, $ave up. That sport button is fun city.

If you go looking at one here's a tip:

Open the rear engine cover. On the right side, you'll find the "T" handle. Inspect the cord that passes through it to ensure it's not frayed. Then before pulling it, make sure you prime the engine a little and set the choke. Then pull like the dickens!

We got an 89 3.2 cab into the shop yesterday for a check-up, and the owner said "Kevin, go drive the hell out of it I want it right." After a few miles, I realised why I drive a 928.

I don't know about $20k, but anyone who's interested could probably talk me out of this one for just a bit more. '95 993 C4 Cab, 92,000 miles. Has been extremely reliable - much more so than any 928 I've ever owned.

993 just doesn't do it for me ...

Not the 928 OC license plate holder.
