A Guards Red 1980's era 930 Turbo.

$30-40k might get you one.

Under 20K is hard to do with a running, great condition 911.

I'd never replace my 928 with a 911.

Having one of each IMO is the way to go, however, you may need to increase over $20K to get a desirable and more importantly reliable runner.

Good luck!

I'd buy back my first Porsche for what I sold it for. !970 911S under 50K rustfree for $6000.

I aready have something completely different - but not for USD 20K.
But, then you would not get much of a 928 either, for USD 20K, here in Nisse.

And, to tell you what you wanted to hear - yes, the 911's of similar model year to a 928 look outdated in both technical and also styling, especially interior.
Still, they are priced higher than 928's.
That is because they have other qualities, that many people desire.

Here in Nisse you will not find a decent, running 911, of any model year, for USD 20K.

I've replaced my 928s twice with 911s, over the years, and look what I'm driving again! I guess I'm a glutton for punishment...

Yeah, He's smoking something, "middle year" Magnesium case 2.7 1974-1977 911s are worthless he's lucky to pull $5-6K from that car.

Legend is that Porsche used the leftover magnesium cases from these cars melted them down and used them for our S4/GT/GTS intake Plenums

From having owned many 911 based P-cars and now the 928, I would want an 87-88 G50 Carrera as my first choice, if returning to 911's.

If you pushed the budget a little, I would opt again for a MY95 993.

$0.02

My '95 993 was a great car, in fact it was probably my favorite. reliable, good power. Looked great with PSS9 Coilovers and 19" Speedline Rg5. The new owner is my friend, and drives it everyday with No Problems. 993s are great cars. But still nice ones are near $30k and up

I just bought an '87 Targa last month. Very happy with it so far, but it's nowhere near the power of the 928

Well the 20k limit was just something to keep everyone from naming GT2's and 3's. If I open it up to any price I'll take a Carerra GT but I'm not even wealthy enough to dream about that one.

I'll probably never own a 911 type anyway but I've been trying learn the differences and figured since I love my 928 I'd like to know what 911 other 928 lovers prefer....

This one is easy - a 1985 cabrio - red with tan interior and black roof. It absolutely must have a whale tail, even if it's duct taped on. That's what I lusted after in high school (other than every girl I saw with big hair) I'm also partial to Targas of any year.
