I just paid $1178 for taxes and tags on my '93 GTS.
LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!!!!
Oh, that's right, we revolted from England years ago.....
Guess these $1178 taxes were for putting new lane stripes down about 700 miles of highway.....

I had a car that I did not register for 10 years. I went to DMV. They had no record of it any more. I had no problem getting it registered and did not have to pay back fees. I don't know the law on this and have tried to look it up subsequently when I was interested in a motorcycle that had not been registered for 5 years, but all I could find indicated the delinquent registration fees would be due.

Confirmed, I think.
I dug out my pink slip to get my VIN & plate # (and it's so old it is a pink...slip), then I went here:
https://mv.dmv.ca.gov/FeeCalculatorWeb/renewalForm.do
They have no records matching. So I think I'm clear!
Thanks everyone!

I love it when the Bureaucrats lose one.

I did this with an Avanti a few years back. It had been out of the system for a while. No back reg fees. They made me bring it in to a DMV for a VIN verification. I think it can also be done at some CHP offices.

I had a 'discussion' with the DMV clerks when I brought my 8MYO S4 back to Cali from Colorado. It was originally sold in Cali, and the DMV clerks were sure that the reg and tax should be calc'd as if the car had never left and never changed hands. They had a tough time believeing that a $83k car with 22k miles on it had depreciated that much. But it did. It took a little gentle persuasion to get the right person to come make the call by the book, but it worked out fine in the end.
If the DMV gives you grief on the back fees, transfer it out of state then back in again. Other states have no knowledge or interest in back fees owed here. With a current title from another state, Cali has no say on back fees here.

Thanks. This is starting to look like a sale. He's done research on it last night and found a documented conversion to a Buick 240hp, 3.4 liter v6, complete with tranny. I think it's the Grand National engine, essentially. It's for his wife, for her birthday. We still have to talk price...

I bought a 240D that sat for 12 years. The DMV wanted back fees even though it was out of their system. I was able to negotiate the fees down, just go in close to closing... a holiday weekend helps speed the process and lesson the fees

That's scary. How long ago was this?

I bought it in '04 when I was dabbling in BIO fuel. After 2 years and 50,000 miles of 48HP w/the air on and 64HP with the air off I couldn't take it any longer. I kind of regret selling the old 240D it was slow but man what a tank!

Grand National and GNX
T-Type Regal coupes, aimed at the performance market, appeared at this time. In 1982, the Regal Grand National debuted. Named for the NASCAR Grand National racing series, it had a 4.1 L V6 engine with 125 hp (93 kW) or an optional 180 hp turbocharged V6. There was no Grand National in 1983, but it returned in 1984 in all black paint. The turbocharged 3.8 L became standard and would continue to be refined with sequential fuel injection and intercooling. In 1987 it reached 245 hp (182 kW) and 355 lb/ft (481 N·m) of torque.
1987 also offered a lightweight WE4 (Turbo T) option. Only 1,547 of this variant were produced. They were painted black and treated to the same blackout package as the Grand National, including bumpers, grille, headlight and taillight trim. The differences between a WE4 and the base Grand National were the interior trim package, wheels, exterior badging, aluminum bumper supports, and aluminum rear brake drums as opposed to the Grand National's cast iron. The rear spoiler was only available as a dealer installed option. 1987 was the only year that the LC2 Turbo option was available on any Regal, making it possible to even see a Limited with a vinyl landau roof and a power bulge turbo hood.
For the final year, 1987, Buick introduced the GNX at $29,000. Produced by McLaren/ASC, Buick underrated the GNX at 276 hp (206 kW) and a very substantial 360 lb/ft (488 N·m) of torque.[1] This was created so as to be "Grand National to end all Grand Nationals," as the next model year converted the chassis to front-wheel drive.
If it's not a turbocharged engine, you have the standard V6 Buick engine that ranged from 96HP up to 205HP. If you have some documentation on the engine code or actual HP figures, I'd like to know about it.

Many states are passing new laws(that IMHO really suck *****) In michigan the old law stated once a lien was over 10 years old the secretary of state did not require proof from the bank the loan was paid off...Now when transfering a title you must provide a loan terminaton statement with the title. If you buy lets say a 67 camaro and it had a loan/lien on it from 15 years ago(you would be required to have a statment from the bank saying it is paid off) This kinda sucks if the bank or credit union folded up 5-10 years ago! It may take months to get all the paperwork in order to register or even drive the F'ing car!
