Default barnfind - registration fees

I'll leave it to Randy to determine if this is off topic or not. (Randy, FWIW, I've registered as a member this morning in case you haven't seen it) I would think the answers would apply to 928s as well.

I have a non-928 car (literally) in a barn waiting for someone to find (1970 Opel GT). In fact, my work neighbor is kind of a car nut and wants to buy it for his wife; they would drop a small block in it :0

The problem is that I never non-op'ed it and it hasn't been registered at least since '99, maybe earlier (I don't remember). Are there any explicit CA regulations that would allow us to get out of the past registration fees? Or even loop holes? Maybe it's possible to get it registered in some other state, and then correctly back in CA?

Ideas?

Odds are it is purged from the DMV computer and no fees will be added. My 911 was a 1968 that was parked for about 10 years the seller THOUGHT back fees would be due but they were not.....I paid $800 for it as a parts car.....sold it for $12,000 after putting in a $15,000 engine , plus paint , wheels , tires , supension

Do you know how often the DMV purges the records?

FWIW, I just bought a new motorcycle that hadn't been registered since 2003, and it was still in the system.

Hmm I thought DMV keeps tabs on back reg fee's...... I know of at least one 928er who got hosed in back reg fees on a "cheap" 928....

That's why I figure this is a good place to ask... someone here's got to have been through this before.

I owned an Opel GT shortly after they came out. It was actually the first "new" car I ever purchased. It sure was a fun car to drive. Small, no a/c, kid of like a very small poor man's 928.

Jim, my neighbor is in line first

Seriously, I have an emotional investment in that car and I'd prefer to sell it to someone local to me, so I can see it and possibly drive it at some point. I've had "almost" sales to my nephew and my cousin's son, and a local Porsche mechanic started life working for Opel and you can see the temptation on his face every time I mention that I still have it...

Now, if you were to offer to put a 928 engine in it, that might be worth seeing!

Not that it helps your situation, but the back reg fees on my last car went away when it was reported as scrapped.

Jim, did you mean a $1,500 engine?

NO ....$15,000, 2.8 RSR style 911 , mechanical injection C-6 cams and on and on and on .... There is no such thing as a good running $1,500 Porsche 911 engine

Just remind me not to have you handle my investments. But then I'm the one that just bought a 30 year old car, so what do I know?

Cars are NOT investments they are liabilities. The engine was used from my $25,000 911 race car that I finally cut up and threw away .... put the engine and trans into the 68. So maybe it was a $25,000 engine ???? What you spend on cars is just that spent ! .....gone ,done, in someone else's pocket . And all too often still on your credit card balance

And as Jim asked - How much?

Jim, with a little extra power that would be a blast to drive........

Indeed it is red with black.

It hasn't come down to price yet. Depends on who it is and what they want to do with it. I was willing to give it to my nephew, but he bought a basket case '70 Camaro RS instead. That he never finished

I don't want to turn this into a Opel GT for sale thread. It needs a lot of work and someone else is already in line. If you want to do an Opel/928 project there are a lot of them available on eBay, and it certainly wouldn't be worth your while to transport one from CA to TX But I'll PM you if this falls through.
