I went over to the Dark Side....

Brendan,
The pre 73 409 heads had a wierd shape for the tappet covers. i.e. S bends on the bottom. The later heads had rectangular shaped tappet covers. Not sure on the 454 heads.

this is what I just got to drag my U-boat around, since it seems to just go from shop to shop in an endless round of "now that's fixed, but this is broke" - a Roush blown F150 w/a 5.4L/500tq/445chp motor, lowered suspension, trick exhaust and running at 6psi w/a roots blower all that and it limits the speed to 98mph. too fast for a stupid 5500lb pickup anyway, imho.
here's a video: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...deoId=20099132
go for it! then we can see who's got the fastest 928 - on a trailer, hahaha
mpg? cough, cough - try 11-19mpg. before hooking up the trailer... good thing it's got a 30 gal tank. at least it'll be able to go from my house to the shop 1 way w/out a fill. can't imagine why ford is having a 33% off sale... hahaha
I did spy a Roush kit w/an 8psi pulley, remapped chips... but it voids the warrenty.

I"m kinda surprised you bought something that didn't need to be taken apart. kinda takes the fun out of it all, doesn't it? shoulda bought a wrecked suburban w/a modded 454. then you'd have a blast!
u need to go work for 928 intl. you'd be in heaven... so would my car. maybe we can get a package deal, hahaha

You can buy a v10 excursion for less than $5k. The time, effort, aggravation and expense of building a 454 BBC and swapping over the brakes, suspension, transmission, etc will be much more than that. Not my place to say why have three vehicles apart rather than two, but good grief, why have three vehicles apart instead of two??

The bore seems to be 4.28" So if it needs to be cleaned up, looks like I still have .030 to go for the allowable .060 right? The walls seem very thick (calipers through the coolant hole).
I am doing this "on the cheap" in a sort of way, since, I don't want to take too much $$ away from the 928 build, which is nearing a good "project completion" surge. 60 bucks aint bad for the heads and block and rods - RODS -
How do I measure the rods - center to center? I may have to buy different rods if I want a 4.25 stroke instead of a 4.0 one.
I will probably only spend about 1500 on the engine total, hopefully less, using as many parts as I can along the way that I have here. And the rear end will be done for about 500 or so if the deal goes through on the Dana60.
Yes, it may not add up. But the tahoe has some sentimental value to me. First date with my wife. (and a second date too, INSIDE the truck, ahem) - as well as I have driven the truck to over half of all the US states on different trips.
Its a cool, fun experience. That's what life is about. I gotta get some pics so you guys can tell me what I have.

Probably not both together.
I can hopefully solve the rear end issue soon.
I am not taking the tahoe apart. I am currently driving it every day since the S2000 is gone and the 78 is not done yet. So I need it working. I will do these things in preparation for a very quick changeover.

Brendan,
Summit Racing is also reliable for parts.
Do you intend to simultanously trailer both the 928's? That's a lot of weight. I can understand your reasons to want more power and a reliable engine. The rear end ratio might be another important consideration.
My 6 liter suburban is great for flat terrain towing, but it has the wrong rear for mountain towing and struggles with my ski boat (about 3500 lbs w/trailer). Have somebody with specific knowledge evaluate your gear ratio on paper compared to what the ideal towing options would be for your tahoe.
The other real important (more important) consideration is brakes. The 2500 burb has huge disc brakes, not sure about the tahoe. I'll be you can do a brake upgrade inexpensively and feel safer with the rig.
All said, despite the thrill of building the new engine (which you should do anyway for the hell of it) and upgrading brakes ( you can't go wrong on this), I wonder if you might be able to simply find a used heavyduty tow vehicle, maybe a 3/4 ton, for next to nothing in the current market.
We're seeing so many burbs for sale we are thinking of picking-up another just to have it.

You can build the stroker with stock rods plus better rod bolts. When you buy the pistons the pin height adjusts for the length of rods being used. Take photos of the combustion chamber and also the intake port side of the head. That will give us a good idea of what you have. Chevy cast pass and hiperf under the valve covers as an easy identification aid.

I measured the rods. They look like the short ones - 6.135 or so.
