help my OB take on a Mustang GT
wondering if you guys could help me take on a mustang gt, what would be the ideal way to beet this kid? he has a 2001 stock mustang gt. i understand that i do not have a drag racing car. however i was thinking that if we started from 25mph and went for about 1 km i might be able to get the upper hand?? i was also thinking like a 3 mile race on a road with some slight banking twisties aney help would be apprechiated

My 81 US 5-speed spanked a supercharged GT500 the other day
I know it's not nice to pick on the handicapped but I could not resist.

Under no circumstances would your 81 come anywhere near keeping up with a GT500 ... unless you had all sorts of goodies like a supercharger As to the original question, you will beat him only if you stay on the gas past 90mph .. at that point he will start losing a) speed b) nerve and c) roadholding

at least do it on a local track of some kind. we've lost enough 928's to crashes on public roads at speed lately.
I still say an AX track will be the best place to spank him. that straight axle is a joke except on a drag strip. could just show him the Holbert poster too, then ask if he's stupid or just insane. leave it at that...

His car is about a second or more quicker up to 100 MPH .....(1/4 mile) at 100 mph you are traveling around 146 feet per second....that is about 10 car lengths (a bit less since he only hits a 100 at the end of the 1/4 mile) . In a 1KM run your car tops out at about 115 MPH (5spd) or about 95 MPH for an automatic according to the owners manual . Also points out the danger as you cover a football field in 2 seconds..... I do not think you can beat him but you can die trying....

I agree with all the above, especially Jim
When I was in high school (Long before I bought my 79 from my Father) I used to run the car late nights on deserted roads in the town I live in.
The "fastest" cars back then that I "raced" back then were an 85 Mustang GT (last year of the carb) and an 85 IROC Z.
Now the IROC had a 305 Tuned port Injected motor and I could take him from a 20 punch, pull out in front of him and stay there forever and keep pulling. NO PROBLEM.
The Stock 85 GT was rated 210 horse w a 5spd and 3:08 gears. That car would stay w me until maybe 80 or 90 and then I'd start to pull away. It was much better out of the hole and quicker for sure than the heavier IROC.
The 01 Mustang will take an 85 GT w no problems whatsoever. The 4.6s are good little motors. Your OB is NOT fast and never will be unless,as stated, you put a blower on that bad boy. A hybrid 5.0 might do the trick as well.
Your car (Im guessing) is older than you are. Tell homeslice to go find a car built the same year that will keep up w your OB.
Appreciate the car for what it is. If you want to have fun, do the springs and shocks, swaybars if you can find them, and go have fun at the track. I was surprised how well my 79 did the first time I took it out to Motorsport Ranch just outside of Ft. Worth. The things I did with the car that day I would NEVER do w a bone stock 1979 American anything!!!
Good luck!

You have a classic car, who cares if you can beat a mustang GT. I see 200 of those a day. If you must agree to race as other have said do AX where you know you will have the upperhand and be in a controlled environment. Drag racing on the street is not a good thing to be doing for either of you. Why don't you challenge him to who gets more looks and complements from ladies? If you go anywhere, but the local trailer park I can guarantee it will be you.

You are never going to catch him in a straight line. Hacker has a supercharger, LOL.
Don't race on the street. Blind corners, blind crests and intersections can kill you. Worse yet, you might live, and someone else might die.
BTW, how are your tires ? Something to think about if you crank that Panzer up to speed. BTW, I am not like your dad. I am older, and I did stupider things than he ever thought of. You should be so lucky.
