Teflon tape is made to LUBRICATE pipe threads....the tapered threads which seal by deformation the diameter of the threaded area gets larger as the nut threads on. This is not the correct application since the threads on the fuel rail and cap are NOT pipe thread they are constant diameter. The round ball is the seal and as Kibort points out really do wish to leak when the ball is missing. I STRONGLY RECOMMMEND THAT THEY BE USED FOR TESTING ONLY !!

Be careful taking them off / on, these fuel rails crack very easily.

Hi Rog, I'll take one but will keep my nut Just in time since my fuel pump makes a hell of a noise and I have a new stumble at idle. Plus on cold starts it take times as long to start than usual. Today I was thinking about how to check fuel pressure. Good timing!

Hi Jim,
Thanks for your comments. I guess you did not read my posts so I will reiterate - we have already fitted these to at least three cars with total success and over a two to three year period had no issues what so ever. The teflon was not needed as the threads are very tight but was added as further level of redundancy to be sure. PTFE tape is a good sealing medium in its own right.
The ball is a metal to metal seal as is the threaded nut.
I do appreciate your concern and will review the design again and look at adding an O ring for another level of redundancy.
Better to be safe than sorry.

I'm pretty sure it will fit on 80-84 L-Jet rails, and 84-86 ROW, too, no?

I need to jump in here, since I installed all three gauges on all three of our cars. No teflon tape was used on any of the gauges. Pipe thread is a tapered thread and gets tighter the further it is threaded in. Jim Bailey is correct in that the factory nut is not a pipe thread but a straight cut. BUT, in over three years none of the three cars has experienced any leakage from either the nut or the pipe thread on the gauge.

I also wrote the installation instructions since I did the original installs. I did not say to use teflon tape, but stated "teflon sealant." This could be tape or liquid. As someone stated we do not want pieces of teflon tape floating around in our fuel systems. Remember this is all downstream of the fuel filter. The next component in line are the fuel injectors. So, if you chose to use tape make sure none of it goes beyond the end of the first thread.

Off my soap box now, this is a great price and a proven product. Mine is on over three years and almost 40K miles with zero issues.

Ok so Porsche should have just left out the ball ?? That makes little sense does it ! Last comments the recommended torque for that cap nut is 12 NM about 7-8 ft lbs......might explain why they are "easy to crack" . Just be safe please. It takes very little fuel in the V to ruin your day. And so it is clear to everyone, We do not sell any such gauge.

Hi Jim,
Again I appreciate your concern but why would Porsche leave out the ball??
The ball forms the metal to metal seal - I am missing something here.

Maybe I need to pull the plug on this venture even though its a proven product.
I see Carl sells the same type of setup do you see a similar problem with that as well?

The gauge Carl sells (comes from Tim) uses a thread adaptor between the gauge & rail, and an O-ring on the rail end.

Jim's advice is solid..... BUT... I'm much more concerned now, I knew of the leak/disaster special, however I did my own(greedy boy) install 3 yrs now on my '88...... ( no ball ---- taper threaded the nut end---- assemble tightly ) ....no problem so far, thank god.....I could not stand dealing with the potential problem. I didn't like the teflon application for mine. IF YOU DO THIS SAY A PRAYER...have fun people!!!
