Jim,
I am with you...LOVE driving my cars and that is why you should ALWAYS have a few around that you can drive and if so inclined maybe a preservation car too! As Chuck noted he has Kermit, one of the best early (probably THE BEST OB) preservation car out there and he does not want another one...he wants something he can drive and enjoy (not that the M/B CLK Black isn't enjoyable, but he is a 928 guy really! Right Chuck!)
Being the 928 crazy that I am... If I had ALL the money... I would buy Kermit from Chuck, Blue82 from Kie, Orange 91 from whomever bought it from the broker who had picked it up for $20k, and then I would find a SUPER LOW mile '95 GTS... I would have a preservation car from each of the 4 primary body styles and then I would also have one of every other year model to boot! Some of them would be GO TO drivers, others would be weekend warriors for the street and track, and all would live happily ever after!
I just love these cars! I would like to throw in a few other toys too... E46 M3, Supra Turbo, Ferrari 456, 599, 400, maybe a Maserati Grand Turismo, an E-type Jag and probably a few other for good measure! Well, of course I left out a Boxster and a 997TT, how could I leave those out???!!!
You are right though Jim, these cars were made for driving! But it is always good to have a few preserved in such a manner that kids of today can go back and look at a brand new car from '89, or '82 or WAY BACK to '78! How often do you see a brand new 928? Unless you are Bob, Kie, or Chuck, NOT VERY OFTEN!
YMMV!

Take it as you may, if I had the disposable income to afford the collection I would not hesitate...
Already having three great GTS examples and having sold two 89 GT's in the past year I believe those would be desireable collectibles. Poo poo on all you "drive them like they were intended for" folks, Rare, low mile cars should be cherished and taken care of like they are the rarest of the breed. I firmly believe in driving the **** out of my cars worthy of being driven but these are exceptional and should be treated as such.
Just my .02c worth...

Just for grins the Dow Jones industrial average from 1989 to today increased about 1,700 % down from 2,200% not that long ago .....So the $70,000 original tag for the GT it OWES the "investor" $1,190,000 just to be even , it was $3,181,000 at the stock market peak......now true you can not drive the Dow BUT you cannot drive this GT either So much for "investing" in cars , it just simply does not work very well. Somehow having a just for show car seems a bit like having a trophy wife , but her pre-nuptual contract says seperate bedrooms .....

I think of low mileage cars as artwork.
You can't drive a painting either and look what some paintings go for.

The sale of the car is also taxable if and when it gets sold....you do not get to deduct losses on cars but gains are taxed as Income and not capital gains. Like most people declare that

the turbo S is interesting....but I don't care much for the audi, oops I mean 924..... So deducting the audi and Turbo S...I figure he wants about $100k for the GT....wish I had the cash

Dave,
Lets see some pics of all your sharks together! Anyone who has more GTS's that I have is CLEARLY out of their mind! I need all the support I can get here, my wife thinks I am slipping deeper and deeper into this illness.... And she is RIGHT! LOL!
I like the work of art for low miles cars...that is a pretty apt comparison.
I also like Jim's comparison to the DOW! LOL! Yea, Bob is not charging NEARLY enough for that car.
Brian, I think $100k would get that car for you if he would split up the set, but I am not sure he is willing to do that. I personally do like the 924 Turbo. They are SO rare, you almost never see them...mostly because they are broken in a garage somewhere or in a landfill these days...

IMHO there needs to be at least one example of each kind of 928 that needs to be a museum piece. Not for "investment" purposes, but to keep a perfect example of how a 928 looked on the showroom floor. Well preserved or restored "higher milage" cars are nice, but there is something to be said for these mint examples.
I am glad someone is able to do it. That being said, it would never be me, even if I had the resources.

If someone buys these and doesn't want the 944 TS (I assume thats a 951S?) I'll take the crappy little 4 banger car. To bad its damn near as fast as the 928, and with a turbo swap and some map work would be a 190+ mph car.

I know they made many more 944 Turbo S's than 928 Gt's. But longer term I wonder if they might be more collectible as just about all 944 turbos become either track cars or heavily modded. I can't imagine that there are many original ones left.
