First, I must say I am very sensitive to noises, squeaks, and rattles. And typically discover things long before they actually need fixed. Since I've started putting miles on the GTS there is a noise that is getting louder. It is a speed dependent whirring like tire noise. I've change wheels and tires and the noise is still there. I've had an alignment done and the noise is still there. It starts at about 40 mph and increases frequency with speed. Taking curves, changing lanes, riding brakes, doing the F1 tire warm up zig zag does not change the noise. Wheel bearings feel tight trying to wiggle wheels with car on lift. From drivers seat it sounds like it is being transmitting into the cabin by the rear wheel well. From the passenger seat it sounds like it is coming from the whole right side of the car.

Wheel bearings, CV joints, Torque tube? Something else?

 

Have you had your wheel bearings checked?

Could also be the Torque Tube bearings or the converter bearings. Either of these will make it sound like it's all over the car. Sound transmits through the tube rather well.

 

you do have a point. Sheesh, who puts 5 speeds in these things anyway.

 

My guess is rear wheel bearing or parking brake.

 

Noise is the same in neutral, and doesn't change in different gears at same speed.

 

My '94 has had that same type of noise (if you come down to Austin for 3rd coast you can drive the '94 and listed to it) and I have guessed it is wheel bearings all along but have not done anything to it...15k miles later, no change, no problems... YMMV!

 

Spin up the TT with the tranny in neutral sitting in the driveway. If there is no noise, then it's not the TT. Road speed related noise from the rear would be from the output shaft on back.

You could elevate the rear end off the ground and run it up to speed to try to locate the source.

It's not THAT loud, maybe I'll just put and RMB on so I can't hear it!

 

He had a sound in his GTS some time ago. It was the backlash in the differential he ahs an extensive description on the problem and remedy.

One thing I've leart over time is that noises can travel in strange ways - they are not always where you suspect them. I had noises that I thought came from under my car, and were traced to my alternator. On my other car I had a noise that appeared to come from the bottom of the windshield, but it turned out to be a problem with the seal at the top.

If there is any way to simulate the noise with the car stationary, you could chase it with a vacuum cleaner hose (one end at your ear, the other where you suspect the noise. Bill has taught me the creative use of hoses for that purpose...
