Seeking inexpensive door chime alternative

I prefer the chime to the talking Chrysler Lebaron Turbo I had years ago. 'Walter' would come on(after shutting off the stereo) and tell you that 'a door is ajar' or 'please fasten your seat belt' + about a dozen other wise sayings and then turn the stereo back on.. THEN, after you had complied,he would turn the stereo off again to 'thank you'. That car was the bigest POS that I ever owned. One saving they need to add to his repretoir was 'reach for your wallet'
Never did find where to strangle him.

The Porsche one is very non-standard - you won't find an inexpensive replacement from a VW/Audi.
It actually monitors the seatbelt, the key left in the ignition(but car off) + drivers door open, the markers lights on and door open with key out (including the parking light modes).
It has some uses... the parking light mode is perhaps the most useful for when you turn into a parking space and the auto cancel doesn't quite return the stalk...

You pull the relay out of the socket - ROW cars have no relay...
If you have a '90 or '91 you need to plug in the Euro bridge instead
(but only if you want to still get the seat belt warning on the digi-dash LCD display)

86.5 and up, the chime relay also tells the delayed window power relay that you've removed the key from the ignition, and the windows are depowered. With the chime relay removed, the windows will work until you open the door, ignoring the key.

I don't think it works that way Ken. On all vehicles with a window relay - it should turn on with the accessory position and off with ignition off AND either door opening (except on a ROW car) - on some years this includes the hatch opening.
The timing relay uses the door pin switch input to determine if a door is open - since for marker lights-on and key-in warnings it only alerts at these times...
On an '86 the input to the timing relay is connected directly to both the door pin switches, the hatch switch, the regulator relay and to the interior light relay trigger input.
See the extra CE connections to F15 on page 1 of the FWM (as well as on page 2 & 3).
