Body design question
My 78 and 79 cars both have this same feature. At the point where the "A" pillar turns down into the door/fender mounting area. Don't know what this piece is called but the door hinges mount to the side facing the rear and the rear of the front fender mounts to the side facing forward. Iit has 3 louvers punched in......in a vertical arrangement. I believe the top and bottom louvers face forward and the middle one faces towards the rear.
Does anyone have any idea what these louvers are for? Are they vents? Do they add structural integrity? Were they an optional storage compartment for drug dealers? Are they there just because?
Thanks,
David

The 928 has a strange way of venting the interior. Escaping air is directed behind the rear quarter interior panels, and then into the profiles under the door. From there it goes forward and up, before it is sucked out through the gap between the front fender and the door.

Nicole,
You are so right. I was poking around on the parts car and the lower body valance is open right into the door/fender support. I would never have guessed that in a million years. Thank you for solving that mystery for me.
