I'll write up more about my trip to Tuscany and Corsica later, but here are some pics to whet your appetite.

Default Stelvio

Was there in 2005 just before Top Gear declared it the best driving road in the world. My only regret was that I was not driving it in a P-car. I hope to get back there some day. Northern Italy is indescribably beautiful .

You have access to roads like that and choose to use crappy tyres?

That's just whacky.

WOW!! What a road. I hope to make it over there some day and drive roads like that. We have nothing like it in North Central Texas. Let's see more pictures, please.

Nice road.
How was traffic, seems like few cars - was it possible to drive it properly?

Some of the roads up here are too crowded, especially mid-summer, and it is mostly wohnwagens and foreign buses causing jams. Wohnwagens should be banned on amazing alpine roads.

Europe has many roads like this, all over from Nisse (Norway) and down in the Alps.
Reminds me that there are many, many roads down there that I have not done yet; something to look forward to.
You are all welcome to visit here in Nisse (Norway) and I would think the EU citizens in the Alps will welcome you as well, it is always a pleasure to meet a fellow shark on such roads.

In the US you have the Pikes Peak, should be great?
From the race videos I see that parts of the road is gravel, and the speed limit is 10 or 15 mph, seems like a real show-stopper?

I've been to the top of Pikes Peak by train, but not in a car yet. The race would be crazy though!

I don't have access to roads like that, except once every few years when my thriftiness enables me to afford to drive 4000 miles there and back again, which cost me approx $3500 in fuel.

If I had put new tyres on my car every time they were needed, rather than used tyres, I would certainly not have been able to afford the trip. Don't forget, I simply misread the date stamp on the Dunlops, I didn't deliberately use 20 year old tyres.

Hopefully this will work (it is 80Mb - if it is still uploading please wait a while)

Video Clip

As you can see, it's not a fast road, especially when there is traffic. As you can hear, I left the background conversation on the clip - hope this doesn't detract from your enjoyment!

When I was there, the road was actually quite open, very few cars. I was driving some econobox Lancia but still had fun with it. Once I got to the summit, I found a whole bunch of Lotus Elise's and a few Exige's there from an Elise club in England. I'll be they had fun on that road! Oh and there was some 18 year old German kid up there with a dark blue '94 928 GTS. Nice.

The road and scenery can still be enjoyed even if you don't drive a shark.
I terms of speed, it really only depends on the driver, because this is a public road with all sorts of vehicles and people on it.
More maniac -> more speed.
Downhill any reasonably handling car will do (i.e. no Gelandewagen/SUV), but uphill is a different matter.
The temp gauge usually will move closer to the red when you approach the top on runs like this in the GT.

From the movie, I see that this road is also quite narrow, which means you must be able to stop within less than visible distance.

But, still, this is what real driving is about.
This is why sports cars are built.

I really hope that we do not get silly restrictions on speed and other regulations on roads like this.
May easily happen, in our age where the mediocre sets the limit for everything, it seems.
We, as sports car drivers, can contribute to avoid such regulations by driving in a casual and responsible manner.
Like Paul did in his video here.

But, as it is easy to preach, it is not always so easy to live by the rules.
And the world from inside the Porsche is experienced quite different from what the man in the Toyota sees when you pass him on the exit of a hairpin, engine screaming of joy.
