Default Ring Gear Replacement Woes

Well I ran into a problem with what seemed to be a strait forward part swap. I got the replacement Ring Gear from 928intl, got a used one but you could hardly tell, those folks are awesome.
I removed the starter and the housing, removed the Ring gear bolts and loosened the prop shaft clamp, much to my dismay the prop shaft protrudes far enough forward that I cant remove the Ring Gear, I did not see this on my initial assessment of the job.
My question, is there a trick to getting this out? Or do I have a lot more disassembly to do, my manuals will not be in my hands till mid month and I really want to get my shark on the road. Any help or insight will be greatly appreciated.

Bill Ball managed to do one without removing the trans and torque tube....the workshop manual method. He unbolted the flex plate from the center hub as I recall.

Thanks Jim, and I'll say it again, great part!

Well I was afraid that dropping the tube and tranny was going to be required, the crazy part about this operation is, Porsche put an easy way access the parts, but no easy way to get them out. I may check to see if there is enough endplay to squeeze past the prop shaft but I would say its an inch and a half at least. On the plus side I can clean up the tranny while its down.

“I know what I will be doing this weekend”.

You'll need to loosen the TT from the bellhousing, loosen the tranny mounts, remove the parking brake cables from the rear crossmember and slide the tranny back (with a few other steps to allow the tranny to slide - see link below). Remove the flexplate. Then the ring should clear the TT shaft. The early TT shaft is longer than later models, but it should clear. In teh link below are my steps for replacing the rear main seal, that Jim mentioned, which include what I am saying above, except you don't need to remove the flywheel or loosen the bellhousing from the motor. There might be some other minor differences in the process since you have an early tranny.

Yea until some non mechanically inclined PO grinds down the ring teeth to the point where some of them are razor sharp points, and some of them are just gone, I'll post pictures.

Thanks Bill!
That is an awesome write up.
I feel way more confident now.
