Why don't people like the 928?

Well, I have a beautiful '88 Carrera parked in my garage (my son's), behind which I park my 928. The 911 is a tad faster and both cars make fine noises.
However, my 928 doesn't acoustically assail me down to the marrow or threaten to wrench the steering from my hands when I hit a pot hole. Slightly exceeding limits on tight turns in the 928 suggests something fun might happen, rather than pointing me backwards in the manner a 911 would. Its interesting that "some" rear engine Porsche-philes detest the 928 for its manners. All the while the 911 evolved into a much more 928 like vehicle (better behaved traction, toned down acoustics, water cooling, comforts, etc...). The original 911 is an interesting, classically beautiful vehicle, that will never again be produced in its native form. The 928 really did point the way to the future, albeit with a few detours.

I like to go to local euro gatherings here in SoCal, and my S-4 always stands out from the 911 crowd. The 911 people are usually friendly and always have questions about the 928 Makes me feel good

Some wise *** with a name that sounds like "Fart" is the only jackass around here that makes the kind of babbeling noises you speak of, and yeah, come to think about it, he has some kinda fetish for the 944. Hell, he is the last kid to get on the short bus every morning, and all the other kids make fun of him.......
Check the source of the criticizm, before you worry about what some moron thinks about your car choice.

FWIW... I have an opinion on this as I have now been on both sides of the fence.
IMHO, the detractors of the 928 are passing along opinions based in ignorance and prejusdice. I will admit that I trash talked 928's as german "Pacers" or german "Corvettes" when the only Porsches I owned were 911's.
My opinion changed a little when I rode in a 928. I still razzed my friend with his 928 but softened a lot with regards to what the 928 was as a car.
Now that I have owned 911's, 944's, 951's, 993's and now a 928, I think a LOT of the bias comes from the service side of things. Most shops I encounter work hard to sway folks away from 928's with their opinion of higher cost of ownership without good reward for the effort. I think you add in the "big fish" embellishments to these encounters and we have what gets rumored around.
At the end of all this, I find that all cars have their own special knowledge base requirements for keeping them up when they get 10+ years old. The 928 is no different.
I am enjoying 928 ownership, especially the social side of the NorCal 928 group. Outside that group, I choose to not force the "truth" of the car on those who get uncomfortable with the idea that all those floating opinions are unfounded. The idea is just to "revolutionary" for most.
$9.28 worth.

Well said Jim , many shops /techs much prefer doing something on a 911 that they have done 100 times before and can do really fast and beat the book time so they get paid 8 hours for a 3 hour job.....than digging into the unknown of a 928 where they might need to READ the WORKSHOP manuals (if they have them) and it might take them 10 hrs to do a job which only pays 8 hours. ! .. Early 911s are very SIMPLE cars....you never had to deal with leaking coolant ,fix the A/C , or power seats or power windows

People are scared to buy 928īs because they "heard rumors" that the are "soooo expensive to fix"... All supercars are costly to fix if not taken care of, even 944īs, even to it only have an whimpy 4 banger
With my background, racing and tuning Trans AMīs, Camaroīs and Corvettes the 928 was the obvious choice because of the V8, good quality and nice styling. I Can mention that then I start talking about Porsche at home and that I intend to buy one my wife emmediatly screamed;
-NO! Not that ugly frog! -Do you mean the 911? (I said) -I donno what itīs called but I hate it! (She answered)
After browsing some pictures on Google it become clear that the model my wife hates and have hated all her life was the air-cooled 911īs. I showed her some turbo 944īs but she emmediatly told me the pop-up lights made it look like a Miata (babyface) and that the rear lights looked like they came off of an Volvo 240!
She got good taste and even thou she liked the lines of the Corvette better than the 928īs she likes it because of its ability to carry the whole family for short trips, but most for its power and musclegrowl that it produce with X-pipe and RMB She doesnīt care about good brakes and things like that but Iīm happy with the situation

To answer this question I think most newer porsche owners don't give a crap about any of the older porsches especially any front engine model. Also some people just see the 911 as porsche and anything else as not a real porsche.
About the 928 I think they look a little odd. I like the look of the 928S but not so much the old school 928s and I don't really like the S4 look.
I parked my 944 next to a 928 and imo a 944 looks nicer than a 928 especially a 951 or S2.
Also most 928s are automatic and most people don't want an automatic sportscar. Maybe cayenne drivers would like it.
I still want a 928 because they are fairly "cheap" cars to buy. They cost the same as some of the old japanese ricer mobiles.
I like the 928s v8 and the sound of the car. Also like the interior of the 928.
I'd want a 5speed 928S with updated rims, those trash can wheels on a lot of 928s are ugly.
