Why don't people like the 928?

you haven't run against a properly driven TT or GT then. many street drivers don't know how to drive them, so it's easy to "win". but they can eat you alive even w/a stroker and lots of mods on the track when driven properly.
some folks only like what they like. u like your shark -that's all that matters, right? if you buy a car so others will like it, you'll never please everyone no matter what you have.
so just grow a pair, stop worrying about what others think about your car and enjoy it till you don't want it anymore. then you can say - BTDT and then I saw the light. now I own a prius, hahahaha

Jim,
Quite true, but it is MUCH more fair than pitting my 2700# 230HP (maybe on a VERY GOOD DAY) 928 up against 2400#, 400+HP 911's!
And if in fact my car was paired against the GT5 914's I actually CAN hang with those drivers...maybe it is more a driver to driver thing, but it is just not happening when I have to run in the old GT2 class!

they put me in a class against 300rwhp/2200lb 911's in the pca ax series out here. I did come within .5 sec of 1st in AZ and I was on street tires vs hoosiers on the 911's. guess that's not as bad as the 4sec beating I took in SD at the begining of the season. argh.
as others have noted, a lot depends on the track. when we get a bit more room we seem to do better against the go carts. it's hard to figure out which class we should be in I guess. we have tons of HP/TQ, but lots of weight too. price of being unique I suppose. there should be a U boat class, hahaha
in contrast - a pair of basically stock Z06's w/cold air intake and hoosiers regularly beats or is a very close 2nd to our GT2 twin turbo "resident AX champ" for overall honors. that's friggin amazing. never thought we'd see GM put it together, but they have w/the Z06. handbuilt 505hp motors, AL chassis and frames. rear transaxle. pretty sweet at only $70k a copy.
our 928's are fun, sexy, nice old cars, but I don't really think they are track monsters or can hang w/newer technology hot rods. prolly not a fair comparison though as most older stuff can't even come close. no big deal, I still like mine. when it runs.

What is interesting to speculate about is if Porsche had produced the original 928 (first generation) with the bigger more powerful engine they had considered at first, would the 911 have still maintained it's position as Porsche's flagship sportscar. It's unfortunate that Porsche conceded to the 1970's oil embargo and subsequent "high" gas prices and went with the less powerful engine for the 928. Imagine what a 300 horsepower 928 in 1978 would have done to it's competition in the sports car sales market in the US.

Interesting speculation. It's nice though to have a nice copy of both the 928 and 911 though!

but wasn't the 928 designated as a GT car from inception? totally different marketspace they were aiming for. luxury sports cars. like the masarati, vette and other sport coups of the era.
it wasn't supposed to be a race car or compete w/911's. it was a comfy (w/power windows even!) sporty cruiser that dr's wives could drive and still have the Pcar badge on front so they could be cool. heck they even pulled the LSD out of many of them after a lawsuit cause some putz lost it and got hurt or killed and thats why so many have AT's in them.
I always think scarface was a perfect example of the typical owner, albeit a little more coked out than most probably - lots of money, likes high end stuff but not necessarily a "real driver". kinda like bmw 650I or E55 owners today. great poontang car though - as long as the wifey doesn't see the "repair" bills,

Personally I love 928's. All of 'em.
You truly are a dick.
Believe it or not, there are 944/951 owners that purchased their cars because they actually could afford whatever they wanted, but wanted a 944/951. I could have purchased any car I wanted when I bought mine at 30 years of age. I had (and still have) a very good paying job and a wife that makes twice what I make, and no kids (DINKS as our friends call us). But I always wanted a 944 series car since I was a teenager in the 80's and saw 16 Candles. (I know, call me a geek). Mine is just a toy to tinker on, I have two other (new) toy cars and a daily driver. I also love 928's and almost every other Porsche out there on the road. I can't imagine snubbing another Porsche owner based on choice of car. If I wasn't limited by garage space and my other hobbies, I would own one of each breed.
Let's not be so quick to judge.
Although based on your past 944-slams I feel free to judge you.
The 944 guys were bitching about your car because they can't afford to get one. We all know a 928 is next on a 944 owner's list of cars if they get enough money to buy one...

When I did the first road trip to the Dallas 928 Breakfast in the GTS I stopped for gas on the way back up I-35. 3, Yes three guys, each driving Big SUV's full of familly came over and commented on how great the GTS looked. They ALL THREE said they had owned 911s but had to sell them. I remarked, "You went and had kids didn't you." They all laughed and said yes. They went on to talk about how their kids were grown now, they wanted another Porsche, and were thinking 928. I asked why not another 911. They each said they had already had one of those and they wanted a 928 because it was more their style. Pretty interesting first gas stop on my first road trip in the GTS.

928's rule. Anyone who speaks against them has no experience. I enjoy my 944, but the comparison is nearly zero. The 928 is much more refined and much more 'supercar' feeling. I love it. It's an amazing car. So fun to drive. That grunt is also something I love. The whole car is incredible. I'll probably never sell it.

they do often draw a crowd. mine was on "american car builders" in big bear last weekend. did an interview w/me. was kinda cool. they are doing a segment on AX. my wife nearly choked and couldn't stop laughing when I said mine didn't cost that much to build up. some people just pick, pick, pick...

Tony Lapine said it best: “Give us credit that we learned a bit during the 20 or so years that we built the rear engine sports car and we had a few ideas how to improve on it. That's why 911 drivers don't like the 928, it doesn't feel like it’s handling properly because the onset of all the bad habits of the 911 are pushed much higher up the overall performance curve. It is very hard to make it do the bad things a 911 chassis will do and so it’s perceived to be sluggish or heavy. In fact if you look at the speedometer or tachometer you are actually eating up the terrain at a much higher level with more confidence. That was our goal.
"Cynics and died-in-the-wool 911 and 356 fanatics tend to write the 928 off as a cross between a 924 and a Corvette. They're wrong. If you approach this car with an open mind, open the door, sit down, fire it up and drive it away, it will quite simply blow your mind. To get out of whatever you were driving and take the 928 for a spin is as liberating as your first ride on a motorcycle, your first kiss from a girl who knew how. You may frighten yourself, in a burst of unbridled enthusiasm, but the 928 won't. It's a rolling womb of whispering, humming, tactile assurances that everything on this particular road on this particular day is going to be all right. Dreamlike, you fly down the road like a bat out of hell with nothing more than the blurring of the trees and the moan of the engine to call your attention to the speedometer. This is grand touring, folks, and whatever it costs, it's worth It." - David E. Davis, Jr. April 1978
