Thanks Steve... you know more about it than I do, but since the air pump is belt driven rather than electrical, isn't it 'on' all the time? or is it that it is only required to burn off the extra petrol used during the warm up cycle?

Anytime I do one of the NCT (National Car Test, Irish MOT equivalent) the recommendation is to always give the car a good drive on the way to make sure the oil is good and hot which helps the emissions.

One problem I would have to resolve is if I don't have an air pump in there, how would I tension the belt for the fan? or would the advice be to do the electrical fan replacement?

With no pump there's a shorter belt you can use; I'd phone Roger at 928sRus for the solution.

I spent a little business time in Cork at a Sanmina manufacturing plant; is it still in operation?

Kevinod:

Here is the 79' air pump that I have. Your's free, reimburse me for the UPS shipping and I will add it to my Rennwish donation pile.

Kevin, my '88 has no cats (standard) and Super charger fitted and still passes the emissions test. In UK test is less stringent for older cars pre cat limits of CO 3.5%, HC )200ppm. Take a look at this link (may not be the same in Ireland though?)

You're nearly at the 30 year old mark, I thought an exemption kicked in?

30 year mark kicks in 1st Dec next year, and it's not until then the exemption comes into play unfortunately. Same for road tax.

No less requirement for older cars in Ireland until then as far as I know.
