Default track car owners? ABS or no

I understand the benefit of it but I see some cars that where originally equipped with ABS and no longer have it or it has been replummed. What's the answer?

I find most folks who dip into their ABS on a regular basis or intentionally are NOT SMOOTH DRIVERS AT ALL! They actually SUCK! I am talking about every one of them I have ever instructed! It is amazing how slow they are, but their front wheels are sure dirty and they use the heck out of their ABS! Learn to drive w/o ABS and then when you get REALLY GOOD, you could add the ABS back in and probably go a bit faster even...

If your car has it leave it there...the weight savings are not that much. Plus you can later test your braking by disabling the ABS relay... As James alluded to using the ABS a lot can reinforce poor driving techniques....

I used to disable the ABS for WC GT races, as they didnt allow it, and actually, didnt use it because of a bad relay that Jim helped me with a couple of years later.

remember, this is 1986 technology. the ABS sucks, but it shouldnt be used to stop the car, only as an early warning device that tells you you are over braking, or braking inconsistantly. with it, you avoid flat spotting tires (like going into the corkscrew at laguna or turn 11 at Sears). without it, you better have a quick foot to release and feel the slippage (dont wait until you smell the burning rubber or see it in your mirrors )

later ABS is pretty good, like found on a cup car. thats when you can just stomp and let the car do the braking. (in my opinion, the most technical skill part of racing). Also, if you use the ABS on a 928, count on stopping about 100ft further down the race way. it might be tires , dirt or another car.

I've only tracked one car with ABS and never noticed it while on track.

I need the ABS in my car because the PSD reads off it... Must say though that I have rarely triggered it...

My ABS is fully functional, but I don't believe that I have ever triggered it on the track.... though that is probably a sign that I'm not pushing hard enough!

In the 1986.5 track car I used to have, the ABS saved me a few times as I was learning proper braking techniques climbing up through the Porsche driver education (DE) ranks. After that I never dipped into the ABS system and I was braking very hard through a DE session. Unless it's required to be removed I would just leave it alone for now.

Thats right. you leave it on, and just use it as a safety net. when you hear it, you have gone too far,and back off. Its a great way of learning the limits of the cars stopping capability.

It does help to keep you from flat spotting and rendering useless a $400 tire unless of course you source your tires for free from the dumpster

The ABS stays. I may re-route the wiring and feeds from the rear to clean up the interior.
