Default Wanted - air pump

Hi all,

looking for an air pump (aka smog pump) for a 79 manual 928, UK model, good condition.

I'm in Ireland (republic). If anyone has one they'd be willing to sell let me know!

Kev.

I have some off of 87's if they will fit, you can have it for the shipping. Note that I'm in the U.S. midwest, so you may find one closer and consequently cheaper shipping, but the offer is on the table.

Thanks Rod! On the 79 it shares the belt with the cooling fan, if it does on the 87 might be in business!

It's been ages since I looked, but I think it has a single groove pulley. On the other hand, it may be as simple as swaping the pulleys. Let the more informed step in and set up straight.

The belt drive is different on the 'newer' cars for the air pump.

Kevin, is the pump an absolute necessity in Ireland?.............you may want to consider newer cats that don't require the air pump and all the assorted plumbing.

The 78 & 79 cars were different.

Hard to be sure it's a necessity until I put it through the emissions test, but I reckon it probably is... Is the air pump solely for emissions or does it serve other purposes too?

Maybe the newer cats might be an option, but new cats are probably going to be expensive? Presumably there's a lambda sensor in there somewhere that expects the air from the air pump to be in the mix?

In rural Canada we don't worry to much about these things; there more deer, elk and bear doing business in the woods affecting air pollution than those of us who drive sport cars for a short period of our frozen year.

Our friends to the South have many more of us (10x) and are bound by tighter pollution concerns and emissions tests. 928 folks have succesfully removed the air pump and associated 'stuff', replaced the OEM cats with newer style which dont require an air feed and pass emissions.

Roger sells the Motorsport X with new cats and he's on this thread perhaps give him a call.

Know what you mean, if we can get the cows to stop farting the national emissions will drop way down straight away!

Checked and yup, the 87 (928 113 017 00) is different to the 79 (928 113 109 04), looks different in the pic too, different connections to hoses etc. Thanks though, much appreciate the offer.

I saw Tass 928 was getting rid of one off a 79 as it happens so I'll give him a shout and see if he'd be willing to send it my direction.

Curious whether all the airpump actually does is reduce emissions though...

Kevin,

My solution to this question was simple: Get a set of crossovers and high flow cats (I think it's a Y-pipe for your MY), and phase out the stock cats and air pump. The air pump is only needed for the stock cats, which require the extra air to work properly. The new metal high flow cats don't require this and still clean the exhaust properly so you can get through emissions with no problem. There's a bung for the O2 sensor in the new cats too.

The environment is happy and you get some extra HP. It's a win-win.

BTW- My family hails from Cork originally (according to family legend). How's the old neighborhood?

The Y pipes and new high flow cats sound like the way to go alright, but high flow cats aren't cheap in my experience, so I'll have to put that on hold for the moment unfortunately, lots of other jobs that need to be done that I need to put the funds towards for now.

Getting an airpump in there sorts out emissions and gets the air fan in the engine bay going again in the one go, so going for that for the moment.

Whereabouts? I have no idea. I'm not even sure it's true, but it sounds cool.

Very cool about the local heroes, always makes it more interesting. What are hurlers? The captain of the US Women's Olympic soccer team is from my town (Christie Rampone) so we're looking forward to a comeback on Saturday.

I'm hoping to visit Ireland sometimes next year, I'll look you up if we get through that way, maybe you can direct us to a good pub. I'll buy you a Guinness or three.

Hurling - gaelic game, a bit like hockey but lot more freedom with what you can do with your stick (within reason )

Plenty good pubs to check out!

Kev,

the air pumps are only used on the warm up cycle, after which they do nothing. By removing them you will not make any difference at the MOT test unless you leave your car with them overnight to test cold.
